JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Jacksonville freshman
Tatum Brown won the Atlantic Sun's first Freshman of the Week honors after a dynamic start to her college career. Brown averaged 18 points and six steals per game in a pair of Dolphin wins.
Brown started her career in dramatic fashion, recording 20 points in an 86-84 overtime win against Charleston Southern in the season opener. Not only did she lead the team in scoring, she showed up in big-time moments.
At the end of the fourth quarter, she drove to the paint to take a two-point lead with under 30 seconds to play. Even after the Buccaneers took the game to overtime, Brown never backed down. In the dying seconds of the game, she floated a game-winning layup through traffic to secure the win.
Brown's 20-point outing was the most by a JU freshman in her college debut since Sherranda Reddick --- Jacksonville's all-time leading scorer --- scored 26 against Florida A&M in 2013.
In her second college game, Brown once again led the team in scoring, finishing with 16 points in the win over Florida Tech.
She's been JU's most efficient scorer, as well. She's shooting a team best 59.1% from the floor and 62.5% from three. She hit four of five triples against the Panthers and six of 10 shots overall.
Not only is she a top scorer for JU this season, she's been elite on the defensive side of the ball. She's tied for fourth nationally with six steals per game. She's swiped six balls in each of her first two games this season, two shy of Jacksonville's single-game record for steals.
Brown and the Dolphins will face a pair of power conference foes in the second week of the season. JU will travel to face the Florida Gators Monday at 7 PM before battling with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Sunday at 3 PM.
The games will be streamed on SECN+ and the ACC Network, respectively.
