Dolphins Defeated In Rematch With Rattlers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In yet another exciting installment of the Jacksonville Dolphins against the FAMU Rattlers, FAMU got the best of the visiting 'Phins 72-65.

The game was a rematch of an 85-82 overtime win by the Dolphins back in Jacksonville, but JU couldn't complete the comeback and the sweep on the road. Jacksonville is looking for its first true road win since defeating VMI on Nov. 15, with one non-conference game to play before the ASUN season begins on New Year's Day.

The loss moved Jacksonville to 5-7 on the year with a 1-6 record on the road. Wednesday's defeat was the first-time all-season JU suffered back to back losses.

The Rattlers led the entire contest, but not without having to deal with a furious second half effort by the visitors. Coming out of the halftime break down 47-33, Enrico Borio buried a triple on Jacksonville's first possession. Donovan Rivers then converted around the cup on an and-1 to slice into the FAMU lead early.

Later in the second half, a triple by Evan Sterck cut FAMU's lead to just five with under 16 minutes to play. FAMU kept Jacksonville at bay until a Borio layup got the lead down to six points with 2:30 left on the clock.

With 62 seconds to play, Jaylen Jones flew to the basket after a Sterck steal at the midcourt line to put Jacksonville down four. A free throw by Sterck with 16 ticks left got JU down to only three, but time was not on the Dolphins' side, seeing FAMU to the win.

Borio and Jones led the way for JU in the Al Lawson Center, with Jones finishing with 17 points which tied him for the game-high. The Oakland transfer's point total set a new JU-high for Jones. Borio set his career high in scoring with 15, going 4-6 from downtown.

Big man Charles Caporaso added his second double-digit scoring night of the season, notching 10 points behind 4-7 shooting.

Jones also led Jacksonville in rebounds (seven) and assists (three). Caporaso was second on the team in boards with six. Jones' rebounding mark was good for a career-best while clad in green and gold.

In the battle of the boards, FAMU narrowly edged the 'Phins 32-29.

Wednesday's loss to the Rattlers was the fourth ever loss to FAMU and the first since 2018. Jacksonville's 65 points counted as the second fewest allowed all year by head coach Charlie Ward and his unit.

The Dolphins next turn their attention to their final non-conference game of the season: a trip back to Tallahassee to face Florida State. JU and FSU will meet for the 67th time on Monday with the last meeting coming back in 2015. Tipoff inside the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center is set for 7 p.m. on Dec. 22.
