The Jacksonville women's lacrosse team fell to the Cornell Big Red 14-8 Saturday afternoon at Rock Stadium.
The Dolphins (0-3) had three players finish with two points. Junior attacker
Brigid Manning and senior attacker
Madison Plitt scored two goals each, and freshman attacker
Shae Hagans scored a goal from a free-position shot and had an assist.
Cornell opened the scoring with two quick goals, but Manning scored her first of the game to silence the run. Cornell scored the next three goals heading into the start of the second quarter, taking a 5-1 lead with 6:47 left in the first half. Plitt answered with a goal from a free-position, but the Big Red scored less than a minute later. After another Cornell goal, Hagans gave the Dolphins life to close the quarter.
Setting up for a free-position shot, the freshman from Prosper, Texas, rifled the ball past the Big Red net minder for the goal. JU trailed at the break, 7-3.
Jacksonville's offense came alive in the third quarter. The Dolphins gave up the first goal of the period, but they ripped off a 3-0 run to get right back into the game. It started with sophomore attacker
Maddie Herman off a feed from Hagans, then Manning scored her second off the night. Plitt, on another free-position opportunity, outran the defense to the crease and finished through traffic to make it an 8-6 game.
Cornell responded with three goals to close the quarter and restore its five-goal advantage. After the Big Red scored again to open the fourth, sophomore midfielder
Ruby Lynch scored a free-position goal. Freshman midfielder
Kayla Plotts made it two in a row for JU as she scored from a free-position opportunity. Jacksonville couldn't continue the run, though, and the Big Red closed out the win with two late goals.
