Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dolphins Defeated At FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Jacksonville University men's basketball team suffered its second ASUN road loss of the season Tuesday, dropping 72-56 to FGCU.

Jacksonville (16-11, 10-5) previously was a perfect 6-0 in road ASUN contests before a loss at North Alabama and now a loss at FGCU.

Leading for just 3:09, the second game this season against the Eagles played out far differently than the contest at Swisher Gymnasium.

With about 10 minutes to go in the first half, Robert McCray V put Jacksonville ahead for the first time, 15-14.

JU maintained about a three-point lead for the next handful of possessions before FGCU took the lead back and never relinquished it for the duration of the game. The Dolphins have now lost their last seven matchups against FGCU and 14 of the last 15.

A trio of Dolphins scored 12 points in the game. Zimi Nwokeji got his 12 behind a 4-5 shooting performance from deep. McCray scored his on four made shots, including one triple. Jakari Spence got his scoring mark from six makes inside the arc.

Without the services of Stephon Payne III for the second straight game, rebounding was handled by the whole team. McCray led the squad with eight, just two rebounds shy of his first career double-double.

Kendall Munson, who scored 10, grabbed five boards as did Spence. Nwokeji finished with four.

In the end however, the Dolphins lost the rebounding battle 40-35, only the fourth time in ASUN play a team has bested the 'Phins on the glass.

Donovan Rivers, who started his second straight game in the place of Payne, scored three points and snagged a pair of rebounds but found himself in foul trouble all evening.

By game's end, JU outshot FGCU 45.5% to 41.9%. The big disparity in the game came in the form of Jacksonville fouls.

JU put up 18 fouls (to FCGU's 14) and put the Eagles on the charity stripe for 23 shots. FGCU made 19 of them, compared to JU's 5-15 mark. As a program, FGCU ranked 353—or third worst in Division 1—in terms of free throw attempts per game with just 12.6 attempts on average. Prior to the rematch with JU, FGCU had taken just 41 more free throws than the last ranked NCAA team.

FGCU was also ranked 354 in terms of free throws made per game (8.6) or second worst in D1.

Defensively, JU recorded six blocks with a pair coming from Nwokeji and McCray each. Spence led the team with two steals.

Jacksonville's 56 points was its lowest production total in ASUN play and tied for the team's lowest total since losing to UGA.

The team can't rest however, as it has one final road game to close the regular season: a trip to rival North Florida. Looking to avoid the season sweep at the hands of the Ospreys, JU will tip off at UNF on ESPN+ Thursday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.
