The Jacksonville women's basketball team fell to the North Florida Ospreys 69-61 Saturday afternoon in the Dolphins regular season finale. JU will turn its attention to the postseason as it awaits its fate in the ASUN tournament.
The Dolphins (14-16, 8-10 ASUN) were led by senior guard
Priscilla Williams and
Edyn Battle. Battle finished with a team-high 20 points on 8-17 shooting. She also dished a team-high three assists. Williams finished with her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.Â
Jacksonville went down early as the Ospreys took an early 6-2 lead. The Dolphins responded, and Williams hit a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game late in the first but North Florida took a 19-15 lead into the second quarter. Mariah Knight drilled a jumper from the top of the key to give the Dolphins a four-point lead midway through the second.
With a minute left in the half, sophomore guard
Sana'a Garrett drew a foul and drilled both shots at the stripe to give Jacksonville a six-point advantage. The Ospreys responded with a mini run of their own, but JU led 36-34 at the break.Â
Battle and the Jacksonville offense got hot in the third, blowing their lead up as high as eleven points. North Florida cut the lead to six to end the quarter. The hosts went on a long run of their own in the fourth quarter, retaking the lead with under five minutes to play. Graduate student forward
Makayla Edwards hit a 3-pointer in the corner to restore the Dolphins advantage, but North Florida pulled away in the final minutes for the win.Â
