Big Hits Power Jacksonville Past Army

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- In the final game of the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge, the JU Dolphins defeated Army 7-2 in a rematch between the two programs.

Earlier in the tournament JU defeated Army 8-4 behind power hitting and did so again in Saturday's finale.

Jacksonville (13-10) found itself down a run after the top of the first but found its footing on the basepath in the third inning. In the third, Army had three fielding errors that resulted in a handful of Jacksonville runs. Jazz Jones and Madison Bratek each scored on throwing errors to get JU a 2-1 lead.

Gabby Baylog later scored on an error but before Baylog could reach home however, she knocked in an RBI-double to score Haley Fox. Baylog got her hit after a 13 pitch at-bat that saw her with a 3-2 count before she made contact in play.

The game broke open in the fourth when Alayna Gaddy crushed a solo homer to left field. Another throwing mishap by the Black Knights saw Jones again come home.

Jones wasn't done stomping on home plate as in the sixth Fox hit a grounder that pushed the shortstop back to the dugout, and the game to a 7-1 score. Army scored its final run on a sac-fly, but the damage was far too much for the Black Knights to recover from.

At the plate, JU had four doubles. Bratek had two, part of a 3-4 showing from the leadoff hitter. She leads the team with five doubles thus far. Baylog and Jones each finished with one.

"It is just about putting our best swing on good pitches to hit," head coach Erica Ayers said of her team's batting performance. "When we do that, the results are solid."

Bratek and fellow Preseason All-ASUN honoree Averi Harcus each swiped a bag.

In the circle, freshman Hailey Strunk picked up her first win of the season (1-2). The frosh went four innings, allowing four hits and fanning a batter. Sophomore Skylar Waggoner came on in relief and fanned a pair in three innings of work.

Jacksonville's win was its second in three games and its final nonconference game of the season. The win represents JU's last time on the field before ASUN play begins at FGCU on March 15.

The 'Phins have scored 19 runs in their past three games and will look to bring that batting down to South Florida against the Eagles.

GAME NOTES

  • The Dolphin power output was led by Bratek, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
  • Jacksonville pitchers faced 32 Army hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out three.
