ST. CHARLES, Mo. --- The Jacksonville women's lacrosse team defeated the Lindenwood Lions 16-11 on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon. Lindenwood was held to a season-low 11 goals.
The Dolphins were led by junior attacker
Ainsley Scruggs and freshman attacker
Shae Hagans. The duo each scored four goals as Jacksonville scored at least 16 goals for the fourth time in the last five games.
Junior attacker
Olivia Johnson put JU on the board first, finding space on the back pipe and burying it past the goalie. After Lindenwood equalized, sophomore midfielder
Allyx Berry beat her defender up top and beat the goalie to retake the lead.
Neither team could break through in the first, as Hagans ripped a free-position shot past the net-minder to tie the game at three through the first period of play.
Scruggs split a double team and found senior attacker
Madison Plitt open on the crease to put Jacksonville back in front, 4-3. Scruggs turned scorer on the next possession, beating her defender inside and burying the shot.
Sophomore midfielder
Jessica Giller made it a 3-0 run in as many possessions, capitalizing on a free-position shot. Hagans made it 7-3 Dolphins as she ripped another free-position goal past the goalie's ear. Scruggs and Hagans each added another goal as Jacksonville capped a 6-1 second quarter and took a five-goal lead into the halftime break.
The Dolphins kept their foot on the gas early in the third quarter. Hagans and Scruggs kept on scoring, as did sophomore attacker
Maeve Brennan who added a pair of goals in the third.Â
Plitt scored on a free-position shot to give JU a 14-5 lead before the teams headed to the locker room for a brief weather delay. In the fourth quarter, Lindenwood battled back, but it was a case of too little, too late as Scruggs added her fourth of the day and Jacksonville held on for a comfortable victory.
