ERIE, Pa. --- The Jacksonville volleyball team rolled to a victory over the Mercyhurst Lakers in straight-sets. The Dolphins have won their last two matches in straight-sets, and they've won two-thirds of sets played this season.
Junior
Rebekah Williams set the tone for Jacksonville. She had her best showing in a JU jersey, recording 12 kills (4 per set) while hitting a red-hot .500. The Dolphins as a team hit .301 as they outscored Mercyhurst 75-48.
How It Happened
Set 1
The Dolphins were in control from the opening whistle. Jacksonville collected points from Mercyhurst attack errors, before the front line --- led by sophomore
Haley Yount and junior
Claire Mrukowski and Alijah Heins --- took command to put JU up 7-3.
Jacksonville kept its foot on the gas, nursing double-digit leads most of the set. The Dolphins went up 23-10 off of Williams' third kill of the set, before a service error and kill from graduate student
Madi Novak closed out the set, 25-11.
Set 2
The Lakers were more game in the second set, taking an early lead, 5-4. Jacksonville still showed itself as the superior team, launching a quick 3-0 run to retake the lead. The sides traded blows before Mrukowski and senior
Lydia Mesusan ripped three-straight kills to put JU up 13-9.
Soon after, Williams took over for the Dolphins. She buried Mercyhurst with five kills to put JU up 20-13. Senior
Jamie Seward entered the game and closed out the set with her first two kills of the year, giving the Dolphins the set win, 25-17.
Set 3
Mercyhurst rallied early in the third, looking to avoid the sweep on its home floor. The Lakers tied the game at eight, but JU would hold on to the lead the rest of the way, though not pulling too far away.
JU led 18-16 after a service error before a 3-0 run pushed the lead to five and forced a Lakers timeout. Mercyhurst got the lead back down to three, but the Dolphins closed out the match.
Novak fired off her eighth kill of the afternoon, then an attack error put JU on match point. After a Lakers kill, Mesusan slapped home her seventh kill of the day to secure the straight-sets win.
