Jacksonville Falls At Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The Jacksonville Dolphins dropped a four-set match (18-25, 21-25, 25-22, 26-28) to the Lipscomb Bisons to close a 1-1 week in Atlantic Sun Conference play. Jacksonville (7-9, 1-2 ASUN) was led once again by its veterans, as graduate student Abbie Tuyo (13 kills) and senior Claire Mrukowski (10 kills) led the JU offense.

More than the offense, the Dolphins had one of their best defensive showings of the season. Jacksonville recorded a season-best 13 total blocks and were one shy of a season-high with 69 digs. Freshman Selah Simien stepped up at libero, tallying a season-high 16 digs. In the front row, junior Haley Yount showed why she was the ASUN Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, tallying a season-high eight blocks.

Set One
The Bisons jumped out to an early lead in the first set, setting the tempo in the opening set. Tuyo notched a kill to spark a minor JU run, but the hosts secured the first set by seven points.

Set Two
The Dolphins showed more life in the second, especially behind the strength of their block. Jacksonville finished with four team blocks in the second, including a big rejection from Tuyo and Yount to give JU an early 14-12 lead.

The Bisons flipped the script in the second half of the set en route, winning six of the final eight points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set Three
Early in the third, it looked like Jacksonville would end Saturday early. Lipscomb led by four multiple times in the middle of the set, but the Dolphins wouldn't fade away. It started with a Yount kill, then Simien set up Tuyo after a perfect pancake dig and an assist on the ensuing return.

As a team, JU was much sharper in the third, hitting .333. Sophomore Addison Krieger was the leader of the pack, notching four kills on six swings. The Bisons rallied, tying the set at 19. Jacksonville responded with one of its best runs of the day, scoring five of the next six points to go on the brink of winning the set. Lipscomb scored three in a row to cut the lead to one, but a Krieger kill and then a block from Yount and Mrukowski got a set on the board for the 'Phins.

Set Four
The fourth set was the closest of the day as the Dolphins battled to force a tiebreak fifth set. In the first 10 points, it looked like a potential Bisons blowout, as the hosts led 7-2. Then Jacksonville ripped off six points in a row to flip the set. From that point on, neither team led by more than two the rest of the set. Tuyo and Krieger combined for a block to put JU on the brink of set point, 23-22.

Back-to-back Lipscomb points put the Dolphins on the brink, facing a match point. A service error and a Tuyo kill swung set point back in JU's favor. After the Bisons tied the set, Tuyo put Jacksonville back on set point, but the hosts scored three points on the trot to win the set in extra points and secure the four-set win.
