Dolphins Punch Ticket To ASUN Semifinals With Win Over Argonauts

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Soccer season keeps rolling for the Jacksonville Dolphins as they punched their ticket to the Atlantic Sun Championship semifinals with a 2-1 win over the West Florida Argonauts Thursday night.

Senior Olivia Peal and freshman Logan Griffin got on the scoresheet to lead JU to victory. The win marks back-to-back seasons with a win in the conference tournament, the first time Jacksonville has done that since 2012-13.

The Dolphins peppered the West Florida net with a pair of early chances. That pressure made an early diamond as Peal knocked the ball forward past her defender and chipped it on the half volley over the outstretched arms of the Argonaut keeper.

That gave JU the early 1-0 lead it would hold the rest of the first half. Jacksonville ceded pressure as the half went along, but junior goalkeeper Taylor Gardner held strong with a pair of saves to keep UWF off the board.

With the Dolphins still nursing a one-goal lead, Griffin broke through in the 73rd minute with the first goal of her career to double Jacksonville's advantage.

That two-goal lead held for 11 minutes before the Argonauts pulled one goal back with under 10 minutes to play. With the game on the line, the JU defense held firm, allowing just one shot and no attempts on goal the rest of the day to see out the result.

Match Notes
  • Peal scored her second goal of the season and fourth goal contribution this year. She's the fourth 'Phin to hit four goal contributions this season.
  • Griffin is JU's 14th different goal scorer this season.
  • Gardner finished with six saves, three shy of her career-high nine.
  • Jacksonville finished with 13 shots, led by three from sophomore Claudia Perez Avila.
