JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Baseball secured its third run-rule victory in six games Friday night, defeating Long Island 12-0 at John Sessions Stadium to improve to 5-1 on the season. The start marks the Dolphins' best through six games since the 2022 season.
After crossing the plate three times in the second inning, JU broke things wide open in the sixth with a thunderous eight-run frame that featured three home runs and put the game out of reach.
Manny Souffrain opened the scoring in the second, singling to right field to drive in both
Abdriel Delgado and
Derek Bermudez.
Sammy Mummau followed with a warning-track sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
The sixth inning turned into a power showcase.
Conner Spelman launched a solo shot to left, Mummau added a two-run homer to left center, and Bermudez crushed a three-run blast to left as part of the explosive inning. JU finished the night with 12 runs on 13 hits.
The Dolphins' ability to string together quality at-bats has been a consistent theme through the first six games. With several interchangeable pieces throughout the lineup, JU has continued to find timely hitting from different spots each night. Manny Souffrain and
Conner Spelman were key examples Friday, combining to account for four runs in the win.
On the mound,
Alex Walsh and
Dominic Pieto combined for a dominant shutout effort. Walsh earned his second win of the season, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Pieto followed with two scoreless frames, striking out three. The grad transfer now leads the team with 11 strikeouts on the year, also good for third in the conference.
JU currently holds the lowest ERA in the ASUN, only allowing 3.45 runs per game.
Bermudez continued his unbelievable start, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The junior now has 19 RBIs through six games, continuing to lead the nation.
Logan Baratta added three hits of his own, while
Roger Vergara chipped in two more to stay hot at the top of the lineup. Spelman also drove in two as the Dolphins' offense continued its early-season surge.
Jacksonville returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader against the Sharks beginning at 1:00 p.m.
