CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In the first day of the UNC Charlotte Invitational, the Jacksonville Dolphins were defeated in both their contests, first 6-5 to Boston and then 3-0 to Marshall.
The pair of losses moved Jacksonville to 6-6 on the season ahead of three more tournament games. JU and Boston will square off again Saturday morning, starting at 10 a.m. before the first tilt against the host school at 3 p.m. Charlotte and JU will then square off for a solo meeting on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. broadcast on ESPN+
Boston Walks-Off Against JU
In Jacksonville's first game of the UNC Charlotte Invitational, Boston University hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to take down the 'Phins.
JU led 5-1 heading into the game's final frame, but an RBI-double and a four-run homer ended Jacksonville's rain-delayed first game in defeat.
Alison Carter got things cranked up in the sixth, down 1-0, with a three-run homer to dead center. It was her first of the year and the team's sixth jack of the year.
Up 3-1,
Reese Wells and
Kate Linkletter each added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Wells led her team with a 2-2 showing at the plate. Carter's three RBIs were second in the game overall.
Boston limited JU to six hits, with freshman
Jaida Thomas also adding a pair of hits in three at bats. On the flip side, Jacksonville tied its high in strikeouts against mid-major opponents, at the time, with five.
Linkletter continued to lead the team in being hit by pitches, getting plunked by a ball in Game One. She now has reached base seven times this season via being hit by pitches. Through JU's 11 games, Linkletter leads the ASUN in hit by pitch at-bats. Despite what the softball sized bruises on her body may say, Linkletter is also tied for the NCAA lead in being hit by pitches.
Taking to the circle,
Jacy Harrelson moved to 2-2 on the year after 6 2/3 innings pitched. She allowed eight hits and struck out six batters. The sophomore Harrelson hurled four straight scoreless innings to start the game.
Dolphins Shutout By Marshall
Carter continued her hitting streak to open tournament play, collecting two of JU's three hits against the Thundering Herd. Carter finished her day 2-3 at the plate.
Lindsey Chadwick collected the team's only other hit, batting in a double to go 1-2 on the day.
Jordan White got the starting nod, pitching a complete game. She fanned a pair and allowed five hits. Despite the final score, White kept Marshall scoreless through five full innings before a pair of homers in the sixth.
Strikeouts plagued Jacksonville in its second game, with 12 Ks on the day. Friday's dozen strikeouts notched a new season high, and the team's 17 strikeouts were its most in a pair of games all season.
Linkletter added to her hit by pitch total Friday evening, moving her up to eight all season and atop the country in the statistical category.
