Dolphins Go Toe To Toe With Austin Peay

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In a clash with the ASUN's top overall squad in Austin Peay, Jacksonville and the Governors went back and forth all game, ultimately resulting in a 65-61 loss for the Dolphins.

Jacksonville fell to 10-19 on the season and 5-11 in conference play. JU has lost its last two games with two games left on the schedule.

It was yet another banner night for freshman guard Hayden Wood, who led the 'Phins as the team's only double-digit scorer, hitting 22 points. It was Wood's fifth 20-point game, fourth in conference and second consecutive game leading his team with 20-plus points.

Wood finished second in the game overall in points, trailing APSU big man Rashaud Marshall's 26 points.

Jaylen Jones and Donovan Rivers each added eight points. Jones led the entire game in rebounds with nine. His rebound total tied his collegiate high.

Jason Thirdkill Jr. was second on the team with six boards, followed by five each from Chris Lockett and Allen Udemadu. Thirdkill led the game in blocks with two.

Jacksonville got out to a 6-0 lead after going 3-3 at the rim in its first three possessions. Both schools traded blows for the duration of the first half, with JU going into the break down 33-28, its biggest deficit of the opening 20 minutes.

In the second half, APSU jumped out to a 12-point advantage just five minutes in. Down 12 points with just under 12 to play, the score sitting at 52-40 in favor of the Governors, Jacksonville mounted a 10-2 run to turn Saturday's game on its head.

During that run, all 10 points were scored by Wood. The freshman's scoring barrage and two good free throws by Rivers got JU to down only four with under seven minutes to play.

With 3:50 left on the clock, and both Tate McCubbin and Marshall watching from the bench via fouling out, Udemadu connected on an and-one opportunity to tie the game at 59. It was the last time the game was tied, as APSU salted away the clock to hand Jacksonville a season sweep.

Jacksonville did do a good job limiting a normally explosive offense for Austin Peay. APSU's 33 halftime points were its third fewest all season. Austin Peay's Collin Parker, Zyree Collins and McCubbin all scored well below their season averages. Collins' four total points were his second fewest points scored all season, his fewest in conference play.

Austin Peay also had not finished a game scoring in the 60s in all of conference play.

Jacksonville returns to action Thursday, Feb. 26 against Stetson for the final home game of the regular season. The Hatters and the Dolphins square off at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ in a game that will also serve as Senior Day.
