PREVIEW | Dolphins Battle For Petrakis Cup, Ro-Wing Trophy And Green Cup In Loaded Weekend Slate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Jacksonville Dolphins opened cup season with a successful defense of the U.T. Bradley Cup against the Rollins Tars, and now JU is ready for three more cup races as part of a loaded weekend of racing in Central Florida.

Over the course of two days, the Dolphins will battle the UCF Knights for the Petrakis Cup, face Embry-Riddle for the Ro-Wing Trophy and take on Stetson for the Green Cup.

UCF, Friday March 13
The weekend starts with the Petrakis Cup in Orlando Friday afternoon. Named in honor of JU Rowing Class of 1975 John Petrakis, the event is an opportunity to compete between two Florida rivals.

The Varsity 8+ will go head-to-head for the Petrakis Cup, racing at 3:15 PM Friday. The race is a chance for valuable competition as the season heats up heading into the heart of the Spring competition season.

The Dolphins will also race a 4+ crew against the Knights at 3 PM.

"This is a great opportunity to gain more experience and line up next to quality crews from Central Florida," head coach Preston Weinard said.

Stetson Showdown, Saturday March 14
After the duel with UCF, Jacksonville will compete in its largest regatta of the season so far at the Stetson Showdown. The Dolphins will race three eights in races against Embry-Riddle, Stetson and Wesleyan.

The first Varsity 8+ will have two cup races on Saturday, battling Embry-Riddle and Stetson.

The Ro-Wing trophy is named in honor of Jacksonville rowing icon and pioneer Bob Neegard's wing-rigger. The Dolphins will go head-to-head with the Eagles in the morning wave of racing. In the afternoon, Jacksonville will race for the first Green Cup against local foes Stetson.

The new cup race is a nod to the growing racing rivalry between two schools and programs closely tied in countless sports over the decades.

In addition to the two cup races, the Dolphins will race two additional eights against the full slate of competing schools.

"We have new trophies and cups on the line in the Varsity 8+ and incredible competition for every boat. I'm stoked to see our guys step into the pressure, live in the pain cave, and lay their life on the line for each other. We have big goals, but we're focusing on executing our best pieces in every boat, every race," Weinard said.
