Walk-Off And Shutout Lead Dolphins To Pair Of Tournament Wins

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Dolphins picked up a pair of wins in the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge, defeating Georgia Southern 7-6 in eight innings and shutting out Presbyterian 3-0.

The 'Phins moved to 13-10 on the season with the duo of wins and have won of three of their last four.

Mansfield Walks It Off Against GASO
For the second time this year, the Dolphins walked it off in extra innings. This time it was courtesy of freshman Emma Mansfield.

Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the eight, and Elizabeth Harley loaded up on third, Mansfield swatted a single into center to send Harley home for Jacksonville's second walk-off winner. Jacksonville is now 2-0 in extra-inning games, with both winning runs coming via Harley hustling home.

JU found itself down a run after an inning before Sarah Beth Brake tattooed a homer into the left center trees to tie the game at one.

In the third, fellow graduate Alison Carter smacked a single to center that got the Dolphins ahead 2-1. Georgia Southern found its stride in the middle innings, getting ahead 5-2 after six.

With their backs against the wall, Jaida Thomas hit yet another triple – her second of the year to that point – and scored a pair of teammates, putting JU down 5-4.

Pinch-hitting Alayna Gaddy hit a sac-fly out to center that tied the ballgame at five and pushed the contest in extra frames.

During the bottom of the eighth, Brake single to center to tie the extra frames at six. Mansfield then capped things off with an RBI-single winner.

Thomas, Brake and Mansfield were the big bats of the day, collecting a combined seven hits and five RBIs. They represented seven of the team's nine total hits and five of the team's seven runs. Brake's trio of hits was her second straight outing with three hits.

Taking to the circle, Jacy Harrelson picked up the win, moving to 7-4 on the season. She went six innings and struck out five. Harrelson now has five games with five or more strikeouts.

Across the ASUN, Harrelson is third overall in strikeouts with 43.

Coming on in relief, Margaret Jenkins went two full innings, keeping GASO at bay with just three hits allowed. The freshman Jenkins has now appeared in three games this season in relief.

Wells Pitches Shutout
Pitching Jacksonville's third shutout, Reese Wells went the distance in a dominating win over Presbyterian, leading JU to a 3-0 victory.

Wells moved to 2-1, going the full seven innings while allowing just six hits and no runs. It was the first full game for Wells this season. She walked a season-low one batters during the contest.

At the plate, Brake got ahold of another one and blasted her second straight homer of the Friday slate in the fourth inning to go ahead 2-0. Kate Linkletter started the scoring in the third with a sacrifice hit.

Brake put the final nail in the game with a sixth-inning grounder that scored Linkletter.

Overall, Brake leads the team in long shots with five. Across the ASUN, Brake is fifth in the league in homers.

Thomas had another strong outing, getting her second consecutive triple and third on the year.

Linkletter continued to be peppered at the plate, getting hit by a pitch for the 11th time this season. Her growing number of HBPs leads the ASUN and is second across the NCAA landscape.

It's right back to work for JU in the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge, with a pair of matchups against Southern Miss (3:30) and Brown (6:00) on Saturday.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"No quit tonight," head coach Erica Ayers said. "A bunch of kids put together great at-bats late to put us in a position to walk it off. Emma works so hard and it hasn't come easy for her lately so it was great to see her hard work pay off. Jenkins gave us a good lift out of the pen, too. She hasn't been in many tight situations and she threw well. The shutout was classic Reese: she keeps hitters off balance and gets weak contact. We played good defense behind her as well."
