FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Jacksonville Dolphins are headed to the playoffs.
After a 3-1 victory over the FGCU Eagles Sunday afternoon, the Dolphins have clinched their berth in the ASUN Softball Championship with a 13-5 conference record and 29-16 record overall. In six games against FGCU, JU has gone 4-2, clinching both the year-long series victory over the Eagles and punching a ticket to the postseason.
It was none other than
Sarah Beth Brake who got the 'Phins on board in the first with a sac-fly, followed by a
Lindsey Chadwick double down to left to score another. In the third, Brake reached on a fielding error that scored a runner and pushed Jacksonville to a 3-0 lead.
Sunday wasn't a particularly flashy day at the plate for Jacksonville, as the playoff-bound 'Phins tallied just three hits with the team's only other knock coming from freshman
Jaida Thomas.
As fans have come accustomed to seeing, Thomas' lone hit was a triple, marking her second triple in three games and her tied for ASUN-leading sixth this season.
In the circle, sophomore phenom
Jacy Harrelson picked up her 18
th win of the season behind a six-inning showing, fanning four batters.
Reese Wells cleaned up the game by pitching a frame and striking out one.
Harrelson moved to a tie for second all-time in the JU record books in single-season wins after her Sunday afternoon victory, only trailing the 27 wins set forth by ASUN and JU Hall of Famer Sarah Sigrest Caffrey.
To her credit, Brake moved into a solo third place spot in the all-time record books for single season RBIs with her pair of RBIs. She trails Sonja Cadarette's 47 and Amanda Schmidt's 50 for single-season runs batted in.
Jacksonville's 29 wins are the most since the 2017 season when the team won 30, and the most under head coach
Erica Ayers. Ayers, who has already eclipsed the 200-win mark at the helm of the Dolphins, is looking for her first 30-win season in Duval County with six regular season games to play.
If the Dolphins were to hit 30 wins, it would be just the seventh time in program history for a team to do so.
Jacksonville next draws playoff-bound Stetson at home for a three-game series, starting Saturday, April 25. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader starts at 2 p.m.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"It's cool, but we have our sights set on the one or two seed, so we can get a bye in the tournament," Ayers said of the team's playoff bid. "Still so much to play for (this season)."
