Jacksonville Completes Season Sweep of No. 12 Florida in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –  The boys in the Green & Gold did it again.

For the second time this season, the Dolphins walked into Gainesville and walked out with a ranked win, knocking off No. 12 Florida, 7-5, on Tuesday night. It marks the first time in the 176-game history of the series that Jacksonville has defeated Florida twice on the road in the same season.

It is also the Dolphins' third ranked win of the season, their most since 2023, and another sign of a team that continues to rise in big moments.

After falling behind early, Jacksonville responded with timely hitting and a composed effort on the mound to take control late and close out the victory.

Florida wasted no time jumping in front, launching a leadoff home run and capitalizing on a pair of defensive miscues to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Dolphins have allowed 14 first-inning runs over their previous four games; and are 4-0 during that stretch

Jacksonville responded in the third.

Blake Edmonds set the tone with a leadoff single, and Sammy Mummau followed with a base hit on a perfectly executed hit-and-run to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. With runners on the corners, Roger Vergara got Jacksonville on the board with a sacrifice fly to center.

Derek Bermudez stepped in next and drove a ball down the left field line for an RBI double, a loud swing that shifted the energy toward the Dolphins' dugout. Sam Grunberg followed with an RBI single to even the score at three.

From there, Ben Baker-Livingston settled in.

The right-hander turned in his longest outing of the season, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing just one earned run on six hits and striking out three. After the first inning, he held Florida scoreless across the next five frames, keeping Jacksonville in position to take the lead.

The Dolphins broke through in the seventh, once again leaning on the top of the order.

Edmonds, who seemed to be everywhere all night, opened the inning with another single. Mummau, the former Gator, followed with an RBI double down the left field line to give Jacksonville its first lead of the night. After swiping third, Mummau came home moments later on Vergara's second sacrifice fly, stretching the advantage to 5-3..

The Dolphins took advantage of Florida miscues in the eighth, as Grunberg came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Logan Baratta. Later in the inning, Edmonds capped off a perfect 4-for-4 night with an RBI double to push the lead to four, marking a new career high with four hits.

Florida made a late push in the eighth, but the Dolphins' bullpen held firm. Brodie Scott bridged the game into the ninth, and Payton Waters closed the door to secure the win, earning his first save of the season.

Edmonds led the offense with a 4-for-4 performance and two runs scored, while Mummau added two hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. In two games versus his former team this year, Mummau is hitting .500 with two big-time RBIs. Bermudez and Grunberg each delivered RBI hits in the decisive third inning, with Grunberg, the ASUN Player of the Week, now riding a seven-game hitting streak.

Jacksonville improves to 4-3 in its last seven meetings with Florida and records its 19th all-time win in Gainesville. The Dolphins have now defeated Florida twice in a single season for the first time since 1995, a Jacksonville team who's third baseman was current head coach Chris Hayes.

Since being swept by UNF, Jacksonville has caught fire, winning 10 of its last 12 games. That stretch includes three ranked road victories, two ASUN series wins, and a series sweep over West Georgia. Along the way, key contributors such as Abdriel Delgado, Sam Grunberg, Sammy Mummau, Blake Edmonds, and Logan Baratta have all seen significant jumps in production at the plate.

The Dolphins are starting to settle into a more consistent approach offensively, putting together quality at-bats and letting innings build. It has been a collective effort, with different players delivering at key moments. Baratta's walk-off against West Georgia, Grunberg's game-tying home run in the eighth at UCF, and Roger Vergara's go-ahead single in the first win over Florida are all examples of Jacksonville finding timely hits when it matters most..

Jacksonville now finds itself in second place in the ASUN Graphite Division, continuing to climb as the postseason picture begins to take shape. Much like its response against West Georgia, the Dolphins will enter the weekend with something to prove, as Queens took two of three in the earlier series in Charlotte.
