Dolphins Drop Opener To FGCU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the first of three meetings with visiting FGCU, the Jacksonville Dolphins fell 8-3.

The loss moved JU to 21-15 and 6-4 in conference play, snapping a four-game conference win streak.

Florida Gulf Coast jumped ahead early, taking a 6-0 lead after three innings. As per usual, graduate catcher Sarah Beth Brake got the 'Phins on the board with an RBI-single in the bottom of the same frame. FGCU tacked on a pair more in the sixth before it was Brake's turn again to score runners, this time behind a 2-RBI double to center.

Brake's two hits led the team, part of a seven-hit night for the Dolphins that tied the output by the visitors. She also tied the game-high in RBIs with three. Brake now has hits in eight straight conference games, including four multi-hit affairs. The graduate has 10 RBIs and three triples in those games.

Jaida Thomas, Emma Mansfield, Vic Brunette, Kate Linkletter and Reese Wells all added hits of their own. Six strikeouts and eight runners left on base stalled much of the momentum JU tried to build through the course of the game.

The Dolphins used four arms in the circle, seeing 3 1/3 innings from Margaret Jenkins. Jenkins, Wells and Karson Johnson all picked up a strikeout during Friday night's contest.

Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast close the series Saturday, April 4, starting with a first pitch at 2 p.m. Saturday's games also serve as Military Appreciation Day.
