OMAHA, Neb. – Despite a strong start from Nathan Disch, Jacksonville suffered a 4-0 setback to Creighton Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha that evened the weekend series.
"I thought we wasted a great start by Disch, who threw the ball extremely well," said Head Coach Tim Montez. "It might have been his best start of the year, and Casey Kulina did a nice job of keeping the game small. We made three mistakes on the mound and they (Creighton) made us pay for it."
Jacksonville's (17-9) Disch started out on a roll. The junior only allowed a couple of hits until the fourth inning, when Harrison Crawford delivered his first home run of the year to left field.
Disch answered back by setting down the Creighton (17-6) attack until the seventh inning, when the Bluejays began the frame with three consecutive singles.
Kulina entered after a lead off singles by Kevin Connolly and Michael Emodi, and would surrender one run, charged to Disch, on a Ryan Fitzgerald sacrifice fly to left.
Disch (3-3) finished with two runs over six innings with seven hits, two walks, and four strikeouts, while Kulina totaled 1.2 innings with one hit and no runs.
Jeff Tanner relieved Kulina in the eighth and gave up two runs on Crawford's second homer of the day out to left.
Jacksonville finished with three hits, with singles by Parker Perez, Seth DeWitt, and Franco Guardascione.
Jeff Albrecht (3-0) registered the win for Creighton with two hits over 6.1 innings. He walked and struck out both three batters.
"We didn't have many competitive at-bats and need to come back tomorrow with an aggressive mindset and attacking our zones. We have a chance to come out on the positive side of the series tomorrow," said Montez.
The rubber match of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET Sunday in Omaha.
