Women's Soccer Comes Up Short Against NJIT

NEWARK, NJ  – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team traveled to Newark, New Jersey on Thursday night to face NJIT in their penultimate game of the regular season.  The conference matchup resulted in a victory for NJIT by a final score of 1-0.
 
Senior Kristian Shores, who is recognized as the Hodges Mazda Player Of The Game started in goal for her seventh consecutive appearance. Shores recorded seven saves on the evening and faced a total of 19 shots. Prior to the match Shores was ranked 13th nationally in saves per game. As a team, Jacksonville ranks fourth in the country in saves per game (7.93)
 
"Although we battled we didn't capitalize on our chances in the attacking third. Credit to NJIT for taking advantage of our mistake and finishing the opportunity we gave them," commented Head Coach Laura Busby.
 
JU recorded a lone shot on goal in the first 45 minutes from freshman defender Rachel Walters.
 
In the final minute of the first half Lauren Chamberlain scored for NJIT bringing the score to 1-0 heading into halftime.
 
Jacksonville recorded seven shots on goal in the second half with the aid of freshman forward Olivia Abdallah and junior midfielder Emma Vasquez. Abdallah, who has tallied four goals on the season recorded three impressive shots within ten minutes of each other. Vasquez put up a pair in the 55th and 64th minute. Senior midfielder Maya Fisher got a shot off at 74:25 after a corner kick and pair of throw-ins. The final shot of the night for JU came in the 88th minute as senior forward Danielle Henry attempted to tie the game.
 
"We'll have to do better on Sunday if we want to get a result against UNF," Busby concluded.
 
The Dolphins will round out their season on Sunday evening as they stay local in Jacksonville and will travel within city limits to face UNF at 6 p.m.
