Dolphins Ride Hot Shooting to Home Opening Victory, 83-65

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (1-1) opened up Historic Swisher Gymnasium on Friday night put on a show in front the hometown fans, shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor to upend Johnson University (1-6), 83-65.

The Dolphins were paced, one again by the emerging dynamic duo of Aamahne Santos and Bryce Workman, both of whom canned career highs in the scoring column while Workman posted his first double-double (15 pts, 10 reb). As a team the Dolphins were 30-61 from the floor for a 49.2 percent clip and buried seven triples. Contributions came in all shapes and sizes on the home side. In total, nine Dolphins tallied points and 11 logged minutes.

Conveniently enough, Jacksonville began this one in a hole, 2-0, but a David Bell lay-in knotted it and first-ever Trey Sides … trey at the 16:40 mark pushed the Dolphins ahead for good. Bell had a quiet night scoring the ball but pulled down a season-high 12 boards to go with four blocks. That marks the fourth time in Bell's career he's eclipsed double-digit rebounds and he matched his career-high block tally for the fourth time. Sides finished with five points but had three assists and posted a +22 in the +/- column if you'd like to get analytical.

The lead grew to as many as 25 in the first half thanks in large part to 11 points from Destin Barnes to establish a new career-high in a Dolphin uniform. He went on to finish with 13 in the game to go with six rebounds and an assist. The score to put the Dolphins up 25 was a dunk from freshman guard Diante Wood who finished with five points, the first of his young career.

Johnson came out of the locker room feisty and fired up a quick 9-0 run to cut into the deficit. The Jacksonville lead was down to nine by the 12:12 mark but that was as close as the Suns came in this one. Santos took over, scoring 14 of his team and career-high 21 in the second half. There was a stretch when Johnson had cut it to nine when the senior scored eight straight for JAX to re-establish the gap.

"He's put a lot of time in," Jasick said of Santos' effort. "He's invested in this group and invested in this season and thankfully he had some pretty good pop in the second half, offensively."

Jacksonville led by as many as 21 in the second half following a DeAnthony McCallum free throw. He finished with nine points and four boards. The Dolphins ultimately settled for an 18-point spread when the final buzzer rang out.

From here JAX will head south to square up with a team from the north. The preseason MAC favorites Bowling Green will host Jacksonville in Miami, Fla. at the home of the Hurricanes for a neutral contest. Bowling Green head coach Michael Huger played and coached under current Miami head coach Jim Larranaga.

"We're going to watch this tape and get back on the practice floor tomorrow," Jasick concluded. "We're going to get back to our effort defensively and continue to grow this group."

That matchup will be the first of four-straight away from home for JAX before returning to Historic Swisher Gymnasium on Thursday, Nov. 21 to host Western Carolina at 7 p.m.
