Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Matt Moretti III

Dolphins Ride Hot Hands to Decisive Victory at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. - The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (7-6) rolled into Presbyterian (2-9) and took care of business on Wednesday night, knocking down 13 triples while playing stout defense in the second half to run away with an 81-58 victory.

The Dolphin scoring was paced by Destin Barnes who was as hot as he's ever been in a Dolphin uniform in the first half. The junior knocked down five triples, matching a season-high, and tallied what turned out to be a team-high 17 points, all before halftime. No to be upstaged, freshman guard Mo Arnold (Hodges Mazda Player of the Game) shook loose for a career-best 14 points off the bench to go with five boards. His night was highlighted by a 4-5 clip from long range.

DeAnthony McCallum continued his hot stretch for the Dolphins, scoring 13 points while Diante Wood and Bryce Workman kept on proving they might be one of the best low-post duos off the pine in the ASUN. Wood scored six points to go with six rebounds and Workman earned a hard-fought seven points while grabbing six rebounds.

The team shot 49.2 percent from the floor (30-61), matching a season-high for the third time. Oddly enough the previous two instances also saw the Dolphins shoot exactly 30-61 from the floor. Jacksonville 13 made triples on 31 tries are both season highs.

The 31 three-point attempts are tied for the seventh-most in a single game in program history and the 13 makes are tied for eighth-most in a single game in program history. Entering the 2019-20 campaign, the Dolphins had made 12 or more threes in a game on just 20 occasions all-time. The team has already accomplished that feat three times this season.

The first six makes in this one for JU were all from long range and the seventh came off a missed triple that Trey Sides soared in and finished with a one-handed tip-in to push his team ahead 20-14. Sides finished with five point and four rebounds off the bench. Jacksonville led by as many as 11 in the first half before taking a 43-33 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Jacksonville used a 14-0 run that built a 31-point lead by the 5:24 mark. That spread is the largest by which the Dolphins have led a game this season. The tally was 74-43 at that point and Presbyterian had been held scoreless for north of six minutes of game time to put this one away. Jacksonville was able to cruise to the finish line. The Dolphins now own three wins by 20 or more over Division I opponents

Next up Jacksonville will face another tough test when it visits ACC foe Clemson on Friday night. The game is set to air on the ACC Network at 9 p.m. and will be the final road contest for the Dolphins in 2019. The team will close out the calendar year at home on Dec. 30 opposite South Carolina State.
