JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville softball (4-5) hosted No. 3 Florida (12-0) in front of a packed stadium Wednesday evening. The Gators were held scoreless in five innings, but five runs during the first and second were all they needed to remain undefeated on the season.
The game made it four minutes in before a downpour forced the first of two weather delays. In that four minutes, the Gators earned their first run off a homer to right field. A big second inning saw the Gators add four more to their total, putting Jacksonville in a 5-0 hole.
After recording a pair of strikeouts in her third start this season, Seana Mora was replaced in the circle by Maddie Kaufman during the third inning. Kaufman allowed no runs, but walked a trio of batters in 1.2 innings pitched.
Jacksonville's bats were slow to get going, but things picked up in the fifth as the 'Phins began to accumulate base-runners. Jacksonville strung together a pair of hits in the sixth and worked their way into scoring position. However, they were unable to capitalize on the situation following back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Four Dolphins recorded hits in the game, with freshman Nydia Perez doing the most damage thanks to a fifth inning double that squeezed by the third baseman. Alyssa Bilodeau entered the game during the fourth and allowed no runs, while providing a pair of strikeouts. Florida's Natalie Lugo was credited with the win, allowing four hits in seven innings.
Jacksonville returns to the field Friday for the first day of the JAX Classic tournament, which features Harvard, LIU Brooklyn, and Delaware. Harvard will be the first opponent the Dolphins face this weekend. That game is schedule for 6 PM.
