JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A second straight close game went the way of the Jacksonville University baseball, with the Dolphins (11-6) walking off 10-9 over FAMU on Wednesday night at John Sessions Stadium.
Â
A throwing error allowed
Duncan Hunter to score the winning run with two-outs giving JU its seventh consecutive victory.
Â
"We did enough offensively," said Head Coach
Chris Hayes. "We feel like we could do just a little bit more offensively, we're leaving a lot of baserunners on base.
Â
"Ultimately, it went our way at the end."
JU jumped on FAMU early, with a big second inning.
Jacob Southern led off the inning with a double, but was caught at second on
Duncan Hunter's comebacker to the mound. Hunter then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Cory Garrastazu walked and
Reagan Wright bunted his way on to load the bases for
Cory Heffron, who delivered a two-RBI double. Two batters later,
Dakota Julylia cleared the bases with a double of his own down the left field line, and JU led 4-0 after two.
Â
FAMU started a trend of answering Jacksonville all night when the Rattlers responded in the third. The first three men reached, the last of which drove in two with a double, and two sacrifice bunts later, FAMU squeezed in a run to make it 4-3.
Â
Jacksonville built the lead out again in the fourth, thanks to Wright reaching on an error to lead off the inning, taking second on a wild pitch and advancing to third on a groundout. Julylia walked and stole second, setting up
Angel Camacho's two-out, two-RBI single to extend the lead to 6-3.
Â
After JU tacked on another in the fifth on Wright's RBI single to plate Southern, FAMU fought back, putting up a three spot in the sixth. Two of the first three batters in the inning doubled to score one run, then an RBI single was followed by an error that allowed the third run to score and the Rattlers were back within one, 7-6.
Â
JU kept working to keep FAMU at arm's reach, adding one run in the bottom of the sixth, when
Scott Dubrule drove in
Ruben Someillan after back-to-back walks led off the inning and another in the seventh, thanks to Hunter creating offense himself. He walked to start the frame, stole second, his second steal and the team's fifth of the night, and took third on a wild pitch to then score on Garrastazu's sacrifice fly and make it 9-6.
Â
The three-run lead went up in smoke in the eighth. Eight FAMU batters came to the plate, and four hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly later it was tied at nine. With the go-ahead run at third, FAMU tried to squeeze him home, but Camacho made a scooping throw on the infield to end the threat.
Â
After both teams failed to advance anyone into scoring position over the next inning, JU led off the ninth with Hunter being hit by a pitch. Garrastazu bunted him over before Wright hit a grounder to third. Hunter broke for third, then started going back to second. The throw to first retired Wright, but the ensuing throw to third to try and get Hunter who took off for the base after the throw to first was high and wide, and after getting up after sliding, Hunter crossed the plate with ease to win it.
