Runs Early, Pitching Late Helps JU to Series Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second night in a row, Jacksonville University baseball went down to the wire with Lipscomb, and a dominant effort for the bullpen again helped JU (14-9) secure the victory.

Nick Love pitched three scoreless innings of relief, Zach Bryant picked up his second save in as many nights and the Jacksonville offense pushed across just enough runs early to pick up the 6-5 win on Saturday at John Sessions Stadium to win the series over Lipscomb.

"Jagger last night, Nick tonight, giving us three solid innings, and then handing it over to Zach on the back end, those guys are really effective," said Head Coach Chris Hayes.

It was truly a tale of two games, as the start was nothing like the finish. Once again, Lipscomb struck first, taking advantage of a JU starter still settling in. Two walks and a double got the scoring started for the Bisons, and a two-RBI single staked LU to a 3-0 lead before the fans had even settled into their seats.

JU responded immediately. Ruben Someillan led off the bottom of the first with a 13-pitch at-bat in which he walked. Dakota Julylia singled to center, followed by an intentional walk to Angel Camacho. Scott Dubrule swung at the first pitch he saw, driving in two with a single, and after a sacrifice bunt by Cory Heffron to move the runners up, Duncan Hunter picked up his second two-out, run scoring hit in as many nights when he singled in Camacho and Dubrule to put the Dolphins in front 4-3.

After the fireworks of the first inning, everything settled down for the two pitching staffs. Trent Palmer (3-3) allowed only one run over the next four innings, while striking out seven.

Jacob Southern tacked on an insurance run with a solo home run to lead off the second, his second of the year, but that was all the Jacksonville offense would manage the rest of the way. The bullpen was up for the challenge.

Love struck out four of the first five men he faced, before a tough walk with two outs in the seventh continued the frame. Then an infield single and another walk on a full count, and Lipscomb had the bases loaded with two outs before Kyle Richardson cut down a hard grounder at first and took it himself for the final out of the inning.

"I started pressing myself, trying to be perfect, trying to throw a pitch to get a ground ball and ended up walking the bases loaded," said Love. "Next thing I know, I get 1-1 [pitch] on a lefty, and I get a ground ball and Kyle Richardson makes a great play at first base."

Including the ninth inning, when Zach Bryant struck out two, but one runner reached on a wild pitch, JU pitching stranded nine Lipscomb base runners, five of them over the course of the last three innings.

JU goes for the series sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.
