DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jacksonville University baseball prevailed 7-5 over Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Jacob Southern drove in the game winning run in the top of the 11th and
Zach Bryant pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for the Dolphins (5-6).
"Really a complete team effort tonight, we had some guys that really stepped up and contributed in a big way," said Head Coach
Chris Hayes.
Bethune-Cookman got to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The first three men reached for the Wildcats and all came in to score.
JU retaliated with five runs of their own in the top of the second.
Scott Dubrule led off the inning with a walk and
Paul Castillo lined the first pitch he saw into left field. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move up and then
Duncan Hunter hit a ball three feet that no Wildcat could handle scoring Dubrule. Hunter stole second followed by
Christian Coipel grounder to second that drove in Castillo. An error by the BCU second basemen allowed Hunter to score to tie the game and Coipel to advance to second. Two batters later,
Ruben Someillan singled up the middle scoring Coipel to give Jacksonville the lead. Someillan then swiped second setting up
Dakota Julylia's RBI single to make it 5-3.
After the rocky start on the mound, both pitching staffs settled down to record 8 consecutive zeroes on the scoreboard.
Nick Love threw three scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Bethune-Cookman wasn't done, eventually pushing across runs in the sixth and seventh to tie it.
Neither offense could muster up anything more until extras. Bryant (1-0) was the reason why the Wildcats never took the lead again.
"Just tried to keep my tempo up, and throwing strikes, of course that helps everyone," said Bryant when asked about helping the energy on the road.
In the 11th,
Angel Camacho was hit by a pitch followed by a walk to Dubrule, his fourth free pass he earned on the night. Southern singled through the hole at second base scoring Camacho to put the Dolphins up for good. Dubrule went to third and Southern went to second on a fielding error by the right fielder. Then
Cory Garrastazu squeezed home Dubrule on a sacrifice bunt to give Jacksonville an insurance run.
Bryant closed out the game with two more strikeouts to finish with six on the night.
Jacksonville returns home on Friday for a four game set with Brown starting at 6pm.
