JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A dominant performance on the mound and an offensive eruption fueled Jacksonville University baseball to a 13-0 win over Stetson Friday night at John Sessions Stadium.
The Dolphins (27-23, 10-9) scored early and often, and collected a season-high 21 hits to back
Tyler Santana's 7.2 inning start, in which the junior struck out eight and did not allow a walk or a run.
"
Tyler Santana set the tone for us," said Head Coach
Chris Hayes.
Santana struck out the first two batters of the night to set the tone on the mound, and his offense immediately gave him support, taking a 2-0 lead in the first.
Dakota Julylia singled to lead off the frame, and
Angel Camacho doubled him in with two-outs.
Jacob Southern followed that with an RBI single of his own.
The Dolphins added four more in the third to build the lead to 6-0.
Scott Dubrule reached on an error to lead off the inning and
John Cassala singled before Camacho was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Southern drove in two more with a single to right and
Cory Garrastazu perfectly executed a drag bunt single to plate Camacho.
Ruben Someillan scorched a base hit past the diving first baseman to drive in the fourth run of the inning.
JU did not stop there, tacking on another in the fifth and sixth.
Cory Heffron and Garrastazu started the inning with singles before Julylia drove them in with a sharp base knock to left. In the following frame, Southern walked and Garrastazu singled again before
Duncan Hunter collected his first RBI of the night with a single through the left side and Jacksonville led 8-0 after six.
The biggest offensive inning of the night came in the seventh, when 11 Dolphins came to the plate and five scored. Cassala drove in one, Southern collected two more RBI to give him a total of five on the night, a career-high, and Heffron also knocked in a pair, building the lead to 13-0.
Santana scattered seven hits over his second longest outing of the season.
"Today I was able to get ahead, put guys away, get early outs, fill up the zone and it worked," said Santana.
He gave way to
Greg Shannahan in the eighth, who got the final out of the inning to strand two men in scoring position and struck out the first batter of the ninth before
Logan Wonn entered to get the final two outs of the night.
JU stranded four men in scoring position and did not allow a baserunner via a hit batsman or walk for the first time this season. The Dolphins also collected a third shutout win by the second largest margin of victory of the year.
Jacksonville goes for the series win tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
