JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team traveled to Miami this morning to face off against Florida International University in their third game of the season. The Dolphins (0-3) fell to FIU in a final score of 3-0.
Due to inclement weather approaching from Hurricane Dorian and to allow for safe travel the start time of the game had been moved up to 11 a.m. from a previously scheduled 2 p.m. start time.
Today's matchup was a combined effort from the Dolphins. Jacksonville's bright spot on the afternoon featured the offense. Junior
Emma Vasquez, who is also recognized as
Hodges Madza Player of the Game, recorded an impressive three shots on goal. Sophomore
Madison Taylor contributed an additional two for the Dolphins. Freshmen Lola Negrette and
Olivia Abdallah, junior
Kylie McCue, seniors
Danielle Henry and
Kayla Hancock each put up one for the visiting team as well. The goalie duo of sophomore
Michelle Jerantowski and senior
Kristian Shores worked to make a combined total of 10 saves for the Dolphins.
FIU (1-2) was the first to get on the board and rounded out the afternoon with three unanswered goals.
"Our lack of fitness and depth on a hot day exposed us against a very athletic FIU squad. I give them credit for putting away their chances and we'll use the video to learn from our mistakes", commented Head Coach
Laura Busby.
All goals and assists for FIU came from a trio as Ellen Halseth opened up scoring for the home team, recording the first goal at 41:06 with a pass from Yolanda Albalat. Less than twelve minutes later, Rayquel Berry put up the second goal at 51:57 and Albalat recorded her second assist of the game. Berry came back as the final goal scorer to put in the third in the 68
th minute of play. Halseth had the assist on the third and final goal.
"We have a full week to recover and rebound next Friday at Costal Carolina," Busby added.
The Dolphins were originally scheduled to continue their road trip this weekend with a visit to The University of Miami on Sunday, September 1 at 6 p.m. However, on Thursday afternoon the Jacksonville University Athletic Department announced the cancellation of the upcoming Sunday evening game due to Hurricane Dorian.
The Dolphins will return to action Friday, Sept. 6 when they travel to the University of Coastal Carolina for an evening contest at 6 p.m.
