Women's Soccer Fights Hard Against Coastal Carolina

Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team traveled to Rock Hill, South Carolina tonight to face off against Coastal Carolina University. The game was relocated to Eagle Stadium at Winthrop University due to the effects of Hurricane Dorian. In tonight's showcase both teams came out looking to secure their first victory of the season.

Despite a valiant effort, the Dolphins fell tonight to Coastal Carolina in a 3-1 final. Goalkeeping came up big as senior goalie Kristian Shores faced 24 shots on the night.

"We struggled to fight adversity tonight," commented head coach Laura Busby following the game.

Coastal Carolina opened up the scoring in the first half at 38 seconds with a goal from Sunneva Sigurvinsdottir assisted by Mackenzie Cherry. Sigurvindottir came back again at 18:21 to score the second goal of the game assisted by Lauren Denning.

Jacksonville totaled two shots in the first half coming from senior midfielder Maya Fisher and freshman forward Olivia Abdallah. Abdallah, who is recognized as the Hodges Mazda Player of the Game stunned again coming out early in the second half to start the goal scoring for Jacksonville. With an assist from senior defender Kylie McCue, Abdallah found the net at 52:49. The standout freshman has tallied six shot attempts and can be credited with all of the goals scored for JU on the year.

"Olivia finished her chance well tonight and I hope it gives her the confidence to put her stamp on every game," added Busby.

Jacksonville racked up four more shots in the second half as freshman midfielder Shelby Brim, junior midfielder Emma Vasquez, and senior defender Danielle Henry got a shot on goal against the home team.

The Chanticleers answered back late in the second half as Megan Brouse single handedly put up the third and final goal of night for CCU in the 82nd minute.

"I have high expectations for everyone on our team. Coastal Carolina was the better team and deserved to win," added Busby.

The Dolphins will return to Southern Oak Stadium next week as they host the Air Force Academy next Friday (9/13) at 7 p.m.
