Jerantowski and JU Defense Stand Tall To Take College of Charleston To Overtime

CHARLESTON, SC – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team traveled to Charleston, SC on Friday evening to go up against the College of Charleston.

The Dolphins (0-6-1) fought a hard battle but fell to the home team in a final score of 1-0. This was the third consecutive match for Jacksonville that haD been decided in overtime.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski who is recognized as tonight's Hodges Mazda Player Of The Game recorded a total of six saves in the first half including a pair of diving stops. With the help of an unrelenting JU defense Jerantowski was able to keep the score knotted at zero heading into halftime.

"We have continued to work on our organization defensively and have improved each game in this area," commented Head Coach Laura Busby.

Coming back into the second half the Dolphins recorded three shots on goal. In the 72nd minute senior defender Danielle Henry fired the first shot.  Quickly after freshman forward Olivia Abdallah took a shot at Charleston keeper with a ball that just went wide. The final shot of regulation for the Dolphins came at 87:20 when senior midfielder Maya Fisher took a shot that ricocheted off the post.

"We need to find some self-belief on the offensive side of the ball. We gained some momentum when the other team went a player down due to a red card. Maya had a shot from a distance that glanced off the crossbar and easily could have been the game winner." Busby added.

Jerantowski and the attacking defense prevented Charleston from opening scoring through 90 minutes of play. The defensive duo of sophomore Makenzie Kavanaugh and junior Kylie McCue recorded a full 100 minutes of playing to protect the back half of the field. Henry, who totaled two shots on the night saw 94 minutes of defensive action as well.

Less than two minutes into overtime Henry tried to end the game for JU as she took a shot that went high.

One minute later Olivia Freitas got one past Jerantowski at 92:55 to secure a win for The College of Charleston.

"We unfortunately had some crucial lapses in judgement towards the end of the game that cost us," Busby concluded.

The Dolphins will cap of their weekend trip in Charleston with a visit to The Citadel on Sunday at 1p.m. before returning home to Jacksonville to prepare for conference play. JU will host their first ASUN game of the season on Thursday night against Liberty at Southern Oak Stadium.
