Men's Soccer Ties FIU in Double Overtime

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's soccer team hosted Florida International University evening at Stadium Oak in their second game of the regular season. After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, JU tied FIU in a final score of 3-3.

"It is good to learn how to play an overtime game early on in the season. As we are trying to get better for conference play, this was an unbelievable lesson. We were able to learn without being penalized," commented Head Coach Mauricio B. Ruiz.

Tonight's matchup showcased the physicality and competitive abilities of both teams. Despite an energetic first half, both teams came out scoreless.

Jacksonville opened up scoring early into the second half, and found the net twice in under five minutes. Just two minutes into play, freshman forward Mason Tunbridge converted on a penalty kick and put JU on the board at 1-0. Senior forward Jesus Colombo came up big shortly after, heading the ball in off the feed from junior forward Jose Manzo to put JU up 2-0 against FIU.

FIU answered back in the 65th minute to bring the scoring within one when Stephen Afrifa was able to get one past with the help of Nicholas O'Callaghan and Alban Rousselet.

Half way through the second half sophomore forward Inti Antunez recorded his first goal of the season with an assist from sophomore midfielder Jake Johnson as he put JU up 3-1.

FIU came back at 5:40 left to play as David Garcia netted one for the visitors, with Rousselet recording his second assist of the night. With less than a minute left in regulation, FIU found time for one more goal to force overtime as Talla Faye tied the game at three with an assist from Andrew Booth.

After two scoreless overtimes JU found themselves tying FIU in a hard-fought battle.

"FIU is a very good team. We had them 3-1 and I'm upset that we let them back into the game, but I'm also proud of the guys for being able to push through. With our backs up against the wall we persevered and we got a good result," Ruiz added.

Junior midfielder Steven Saunders is tonight's Hodges Mazda Player of The Game. When sharing his thoughts on who stood out tonight Ruiz said, "Saunders played a full 110 minutes and I think that's commendable."

Heading into tonight sophomore goalkeeper Matt Levy led the ASUN in save percentages (.875) and saves per match (7.00). Levy totaled eight saves tonight.

The Dolphins travel this week to Boca Raton to go up against Florida Atlantic University on Tuesday night (9/10) at 7 p.m. They will return home to Southern Oak Stadium on Saturday, September 14 when they will host Presbyterian at 6 p.m.
