JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (8-12, 1-4 ASUN) battled Stetson (9-11, 3-2 ASUN) for the 90th time in program history on Saturday afternoon inside Swisher Gymnasium and for the 36th time in series history, Stetson came out on top, 64-59.
The Dolphins had won eight-straight in the series against their longtime rivals but an 11-0 run to start the second half gave the visiting side a 14-point advantage and put the Dolphins in a 14-point hole they'd be battling the rest of the way. Jacksonville managed to get it all the way down to four with 35 seconds left and after a pair of Stetson free throws had a chance to cut it to three with 26 seconds left but a turnover spoiled that chance.
Jacksonville led by as many as four in the first half and Stetson held multiple 14-point leads in game that featured numerous big runs by both sides. The Dolphins were paced on the scoreboard by
Aamahne Santos (Hodges Mazda Player of the Game) who posted 13 on 5-14 shooting while
Destin Barnes canned all 11 of his points in the first half.
Mo Arnold added nine points on 4-5 shooting off the bench.
David Bell did not miss a shot but was just 2-2 from the floor and 1-1 from the stripe for five points to go with his 15 rebounds. He secured 15 or more boards for the third time this season and is now averaging 11.2 rebounds per game in ASUN play.
Jacksonville will hit the road for an extended road trip next week. The team will visit Lipscomb and Kennesaw State looking to get back on track as we approach the mid-point of ASUN play.
