ATHENS, Ga. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (3-1) suffered its first defeat on the 2020-21 campaign on Friday night opposite the Georgia Bulldogs (3-0), 98-65.
The Dolphins kept this one close into the second half, trailing by just 10 at the break and maintained that as the clock dipped below 13 minutes to play but Georgia pulled away from there. The Bulldogs drew fouls and knocked down free throws to keep the Dolphins at bay and unable to create any type of rhythm.
Diante Wood started slow, just 1-6 from the floor but finished strong by collecting a season-high 18 points on 7-14 shooting to go with four rebounds and an assist.
Mo Arnold joined Wood in double figures with 13 and a team-high seven boards with three steals while
Tyreese Davis chipped in 13 points of his own to go with three steals and a block.
Dontarius James was the fourth JU player in double digits with 11. He had five boards and two assists.
As a team, the Dolphins still managed to shoot 42.4 percent from the floor but just 17.4 percent from long range after beginning the season hot from that territory. Georgia shot 51.4 percent from the floor and forced the Dolphins into 22 turnovers resulting in 34 points. Jacksonville did manage 40 points in the paint against the sizable Bulldogs and collected 33 rebounds.
Next up for the Dolphins will be host duties for the BSN Sports Dolphin Classic. That event will run from Dec. 8-10 in Swisher Gym and feature matchups with Campbell (Dec. 8), Florida National (Dec. 9) and New Orleans (Dec. 10). The first two games will tip at 7 p.m. and the New Orleans game will tip at 5 p.m.
