Jacksonville Comes Up Short at UNF Despite Career-Performance from Bell

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (12-15, 5-7 ASUN) squared up with North Florida (17-10, 10-2 ASUN) in round two of the River City Rumble on Thursday night, this time at UNF Arena, where the team ultimately settled for a loss, 81-66, after taking a tie score into the locker room at the break.

David Bell (Hodges Mazda Player of the Game) was spectacular with the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year guarding him. The senior canned a career-best 24 points to go with 11 rebounds to secure his 13th double-double of the season. Bell was 11-13 from the floor after starting the game 7-7 and picked up a trio of blocks. This marks the first time in Bell's career he contributed double-digit made field goals and it's the single highest output from a JU player this season.

Destin Barnes added 13 points to score in double figures for the eighth-straight game. He's now averaging 13.7 points for game in ASUN play against just 12 points per game during the season as a whole. Diante Wood came off the bench to score most of his damage in the second half. He added 12 and consistently finished through contact. The Dolphins attempted just four free throws despite 10 total team fouls on the UNF side. Aamahne Santos was able to follow up a strong week by scoring 10 points on 4-7 shooting and 2-3 from long range. He also added three rebounds and an assist.

Jacksonville shot 49.2 percent from the floor. Just shy of the 50.8 percent mark set by their opponent on Sunday. Barnes canned a jumper in the lane to knot the score at 33 at the break but not without some controversy. UNF knocked down a triple at the break to knot the score and then buried a three ball to start the second for an extended 6-0 swing.

Jacksonville struggled to keep things close from there as the Ospreys got hot from behind the arc where they went 8-27. Jacksonville as just 4-13 from long range for the game.

Jacksonville will be joined by members of the 1969-70 National Finalists on Thursday, Feb. 20 to honor that incredible, ground-breaking season when it welcomes Lipscomb to Swisher Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

The Dolphins will don 1970-inspired throwback uniforms but that's not all. The entire night will be focused around celebrating that historic campaign that united, not only the University, but the city of Jacksonville. The date was chosen in conjunction with the anniversary of the team's historic upset of No. 8 Florida State on Feb. 18, 1970 in front of a capacity crowd at the Jacksonville Coliseum; a win that put Jacksonville and the Dolphins on the national radar. The department has several giveaways planned along with special programming so fans are encouraged to come early and celebrate alongside the JU faithful.
