Greiner's 7 Points Help Lead Dolphins Over Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A rock solid effort highlighted by a seven-point performance from freshman Jacob Greiner helped lead the Jacksonville University men's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory at Marquette, Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields.

"Today was a heck of an opportunity to get back on the field and right some wrongs from our first outing. Over the last two weeks, our practices have been intense and confrontational, and I thought we brought that same intensity to the game today," noted head coach John Galloway following his team's first win of the 2020 season.

"We are still learning how to play together on both ends, but we found a way to win in a tough atmosphere. Hayden La Vangie was absolutely terrific in all areas today and is the clear heart of the team. The close defense banded together for some important stops and Jacob Greiner and Evan Tyler led us on the offensive end. We are a work in progress and continue to be undisciplined in some areas, but we took a step forward today. I have an absolute blast coaching this team!"

Greiner had a hand in all five of the Dolphins' first-half goals, as he dished a helper to redshirt-senior Evan Tyler (12:37) before burying the next three himself (10:54, 6:56, 4:19) to give the Dolphins a 4-1 advantage. While the hosts scored the last goal of the first, the Dolphins immediately went back to work as Greiner added his fourth goal of the game just 59 seconds into the second quarter.

Marquette was able to momentarily gain the lead behind a 4-0 run that spanned the end of the second and into the third, but junior Jack Dolan found senior Alec Drosos to tie it up at 6 apiece with 13:04 on the clock. Just 36 seconds later, the hosts found an answer off the stick of Anthony Orsini (12:30), but the Dolphins pounded the Golden Eagles with five-straight goals, including two from Tyler (9:30 – 3rd; 9:14 – 4th) and Greiner's fifth (7:51 – 4th), to extend their lead to 11-7.

That run proved all Marquette could handle as Jacksonville held off a late two-goal rally to bring home the win, 11-9.

Junior Jack Dolan handed our three assists, while Drosos (2 goals) and senior Brett Reilly (1 goal) found the back of the net. With six saves and four ground balls in the win, senior goalie Adam Baker picked up his first career victory.

Redshirt-senior Hayden La Vangie grabbed four ground balls, while senior Alex Giovinco finished 12-22 with seven ground balls at the faceoff X.

Chris Kirschner led Marquette with a hat trick, while Mason Woodward picked up a team-high six ground balls and goalie John Hulsman tallied 11 saves in the loss.

The Dolphins return to action next Sunday, Feb. 23 when they take on Robert Morris at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. Face off is set for 12 p.m.
