JACKSONVLLE, FLA- Jacksonville University softball (13-7) ended the weekend on a high note with a 2-1 win over the Stony Brook University Seawolves (7-3). It was Jacksonville's second win of the weekend, and brought them back to an even 2-2 record for the tournament.
Skylar Whitty made her third start of the weekend against the Seawolves and pitched her second extra inning game in two days. The sophomore allowed only two hits in the game and struck out 10 batters to come close to her season high of 12. Whitty amassed 23 strikeouts over the three-day tournament.
While the sophomore kept the Seawolves hitters in order, the Jacksonville offense continued to battle with each at-bat.
The 'Phins entered the bottom of the sixth trailing Stony Brook 1-0 and found themselves with two outs on the board.
Hannah Roberts was working with a 2-2 count when she fired the ball out of the park for the tying homerun.
In addition to leading the ASUN and Dolphins in RBI's (20) she is also leading her squad in home runs (4) and hits (19).
Whitty continued to perform in the circle and held off Stony Brook from taking back the lead.
An uneventful eighth inning for SBU gave JU another chance at the plate and a golden opportunity to run away with a victory.
Jacksonville started the bottom half of the inning with
Victoria Rodebaugh in scoring position on second base. Rodeabugh found the time to advance home for the game-winning run while a double from Caroline Waston kept the Stony Brook outfield scrambling around the warning track.
With the win, Whitty goes to 7-3 on the season. The 24 putouts for Jacksonville matches the season high previously set yesterday afternoon against Purdue.
The Dolphins will head back to Alabama this coming weekend for their second road tournament before returning to Pruitt Softball Complex for a midweek matchup against Auburn on 3/10.
