Dolphins Avoid Conference Loss After Earning Draw Against Kennesaw

KENNESAW, Ga. - Jacksonville's women's soccer team (5-7-3, 0-1-1 ASUN)  held Kennesaw State (6-6-1, 1-0-1 ASUN) to a draw on the road. The 1-1 tie would lead to the Dolphins third draw of the season and its first against an ASUN opponent.

As soon as the ball was put in play, each team showcased its best offensive and defensive performance. The ball traveled evenly up and down the field until Kennesaw took the first shot attempt that would be saved by Dolphins starting goalkeeper Courtney Green, at the five minute mark. Through the next ten minutes, the possession rotated between the Dolphins and Owls. Kennesaw eventually placed the ball near the Dolphins goal and took its second shot attempt of the game that would just miss the inside of the net. JU responded with a shot attempt by midfielder Shelby Brim that would also land just slightly outside of the target area.

The next few minutes returned to a back-and-forth affair as Kennesaw sent another ball towards Green, followed by a shot from Lola Negrete that landed in the hands of the Owl's goalkeeper. During the last 20 minutes of action the game fell silent on offense, as only the Owl's attempted another shot before the clock ran out of time. After a tough battle from both parties, the teams exited the field with the match tied at zero.

After returning to the field, both teams maintained momentum to start the second half. JU's Eden Skyers took the first shot of the period at the 48 mark, but was unsuccessful in getting the ball past the Owl's keeper. The next ten minutes consisted of a dominant Owl's offense. Kennesaw rattled off three quick shot attempts, two of which were saved by JU's rookie goalkeeper, Mariah Winebrenner.

At the 71 minute mark, Julianna Hutchison passed the ball down the field to Tino Chiweshe, who found a spot in the net and scored. This would mark the first goal of the game as the Dolphins took a late 1-0 lead. However, the Owls would not go down without a fight on its home turf. Ten minutes later, the Owls scored to even the score at one and force the match into overtime.

Riding on the energy after scoring, Kennesaw took back-to-back shot attempts within the first minute of overtime play. After three minutes of silence, Dolphins Gabby Holtrop and Selma Fohrer took back-to-back attempts but were both unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. Since neither team managed to score and escape with the victory, 10 more minutes were added to the clock.

The second overtime period was less heavy on offense as each team managed to take only one shot before the conclusion of the match. When the final whistle blew, JU exited the field with its third draw of the season after avoiding the loss.

"Our players were outstanding today, Kennesaw is a very good team," head coach John Constable said. "For us to come here and get one point over 110 minutes is a good result."

Up next, the Dolphins return to Southern Oak Stadium on Thursday Oct. 14 to compete against FGCU. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET.  This marks the last home match of the season and the evening will serve as Pink Out night, in honor of Breast Cancer awareness month.
