Dolphins Defeat Eagles In Regular Season Match For the First Time Since 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville's women's soccer team (6-7-3, 1-5-1 ASUN) made history once again this season, after defeating FGCU (8-7-0, 5-2-0 ASUN) during a regular season contest for the first time since 2008. The Dolphins' stellar defensive performance prevented the Eagles from scoring, to take the 1-0 victory at Southern Oak Stadium for its last home game of the 2021 campaign.

As soon as the whistle signaled kickoff, Jacksonville showed its dominance on both sides of the field. During the first five minutes of action, Eden Skyers and Anna Remensnyder attempted to score to put JU on the board early, but would both miss just outside of the net. Through the next 15 minutes of play, JU held the Eagles to zero shot attempts and kept the ball dominantly on FGCU's side of the pitch. At the 20 minute mark, FGCU pursued a shot attempt for the first time, but knocked the ball outside of the goal.

Two minutes later, the Eagles drew a foul that resulted in a free kick for the Dolphins. Lola Negrete launched the free kick just outside the goal to Anna Remensnyder, who headed the ball over the FGCU goalkeeper to score. The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead at the 22 minute mark. FGCU tried to respond with a goal a few minutes later, but ultimately would be unsuccessful against the Dolphins' momentum. At the 34 mark, the Eagles attempted to get on the board once more, but continued the trend of landing the ball outside of the goal. Selma Fohrer took the last shot of the period for JU with five minutes left in the half. As Fohrer was unable to find the back of the net, the Dolphins went into halftime holding onto its 1-0 lead.

JU returned to the field with the same determination as in the first half. Skyers attempted her second shot of the game at the 52 mark, but the ball landed in the hands of the Eagle's goalkeeper. Still trying to get onto the board, FGCU took three consecutive shots with the ball scraping the outside edge of the goal each time. Through the next 20 minutes of play, the Eagles would attempt three more shots and hold the Dolphins to none. However, the Dolphins defense proved to be too strong to compete with. Despite taking fewer shot attempts, JU's outstanding defensive performance kept the ball away from nearing its goalkeeper.

Julianne Hutchison took the second shot of the half for JU, but the ball would hit the top of the goal to miss by only a few inches. The Eagles attempted a final shot with less than one minute left on the clock, but the ball was saved by Dolphins goalkeeper Courtney Green

Chaos erupted onto the field as the final whistle blew, the Dolphins walked off the field with a regular season victory against the Eagles for the first time since 2008.

"Our players were outstanding tonight, they showed up and were phenomenal against a tough FGCU team," head coach John Constable said. "It takes a lot of grit and resilience to comeback after a hard couple of games, and I am unbelievably proud of this team for what they did this week."

Up next, the Dolphins travle to DeLand to compete against conference opponent, Stetson. The contest is set for Sunday Oct. 17, with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m.
