Dolphins Fall to Stetson After Hatters Score a Last Minute Goal

Box Score DELAND, Fla. - Jacksonville's women's soccer team (6-8-3, 1-6-1 ASUN) put up a stellar all-around performance against conference opponent Stetson (6-9-2, 3-4-1 ASUN) on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins took a close 3-2 loss in DeLand, as the Hatters scored on a last-minute shot in the second half to escape with the victory.

As soon as the Hatters put the ball in play at kickoff, the Dolphins showed its offense was in control. At the two minute mark, Julianne Hutchison took the Dolphins' first shot attempt that landed into the hands of Stetson's goalkeeper. Through the next eight minutes of action, Selma Fohrer and Shelby Brim would follow in her lead by each pursuing an attempt, but each launched the ball high over the goal.

After 19 minutes of play, Stetson's offense began to pick up the pace and took back-to-back attempts that were saved and blocked by Dolphins starting goalkeeper Courtney Green. Despite the Dolphins threatening the Hatters early, Stetson snuck the ball past Green to get on the board first at the 28 minute mark. Before the clock ran out for halftime, the Hatters pursued the net once more but were blocked by the Dolphins defense and exited the field with a one goal lead.

JU did not let the Hatters' lead dester its determination. The Dolphins offense was in full force once the whistle signaled the second half kickoff. Hayley Friedl took a shot at the 47 mark that would lead to a corner kick. Taking advantage of the corner kick, Anna Remensnyder headed the ball over the goalie's head to tie the game, 1-1. Following the JU goal, Stetson's offense took four shots in a five minute span to try to break the tie, but the shots led to Green accumulating two more saves.

To break the Hatter's shot attempts, Oliviah Abdallah managed to grab control of the ball and launched it towards the Stetson goal. However, the ball would be saved by the Hatters keeper and lead to another Stetson possession. During the next possession, Evie Wyson found an open spot and scored to extend the Hatters' lead to 2-0 at the 58 minute mark.

For over ten minutes the game grew silent as the ball evenly traveled up and down the field. Trying to tie the game once more, Kaya Williams and Hutchison contributed back-to-back shots, but both attempts were saved by the Hatters' goalkeeper. Gonzales became the next hero for the Dolphins as she powered the ball over the goalie, high on the right side of the net to score.

The game was tied at two with only eight minutes left, but Stetson refused to go down without a fight on its home turf. At the 86 minute mark, the Hatters invaded the Dolphins territory and began to press the defense. A few seconds later, Chloe Washington hit the ball low towards the center of the goal to score. JU was unable to put the ball in the net to tie the game and force overtime as Stetson escaped with the win.

Up next, the Dolphins return to Jacksonville for a match against cross-town rival North Florida. The game is set for Saturday Oct. 23, kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. ET.
