JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University volleyball fell in ASUN Conference play to Stetson in three sets on Saturday at Swisher Gym.
SET ONE
In a set marked by numerous long rallies, the teams traded the first six points. JU then grew the lead to three when
Keyauna Linwood dropped a kill to make it 7-4. Stetson came back to tie it and takes its first multi-point lead, going up 10-8. Zoë LaBreche recorded consecutive kills to tie it back at 10. It went back-and-forth again until the Hatters recorded a couple of 3-0 runs and led 18-13.
The Dolphins collected themselves to produce a 5-0 run to tie it at 19, thanks to two kills each by Linwood and
Autumn DeSantis. Stetson turned it on late, however, scoring six of the last seven points of the set to deliver the opening set for the Hatters.
SET TWO
Stetson scored the first four points of the second set, and kept that advantage through much of the early part of the set, leading 10-6 and then growing the advantage to seven, 16-9. Ju was able to cut it to four a pair of times, before the Hatters put the pedal down and ended up winning the set, 25-15.
SET THREE
After allowing Stetson to score the first point of the set, JU rattled off three straight to lead 3-1. A 4-0 run put Stetson back up, but kills from
Jenna McNamara and
Isa Dostal helped bring the Dolphins within two, 8-6.
The lead grew back out to five for Stetson, prompting a JU timeout. McNamara came out of the break with a kill, and the teams traded points, which allowed Stetson to keep a steady four-to-five-point advantage and the Dolphins never got closer, with the Hatters capturing the set, 25-20, and the match.
Linwood's eight kills led JU, with
Camryn Honn collecting 30 assists, 12 digs for
Kariana Ayala and a pair of blocks for Linwood and McNamara.
JU returns to the court for the River City Rumble next Friday at North Florida, with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
