Dolphins Get Back in the Win Column with Big Win Over Lipscomb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (10-11, 4-7 ASUN) bounced back in a big way when it had to on Friday night opposite Lipscomb (12-10, 6-5), never trailing after the 18:51 mark in the first half en route to a 66-60 victory, snapping a seven-game skid.

Dontarius James canned 21 of his game-high 26 points in the first half, ultimately knocking down five triples on 9-17 shooting to go with seven boards and a pair of blocks. This was a get-right game for James who had struggled to find his stroke last weekend at Bellarmine. He shook that off quickly in the familiar surroundings of Swisher Gym where he's averaging 22.9 points and shooting a staggering 50.6 percent from the floor with 33 triples.

Tyreese Davis joined James in double figure with 15 points and Bryce Workman came off the bench once again to contribute 12 points and nine boards. Workman has also been a horse at home. He averages 10.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in Swisher Gym while shooting 48.3 percent from the floor. Trey Sides battled through foul trouble to seven points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.

By the end of this one, Jacksonville had shot 51.1 percent from the floor and held Lipscomb to 42.9 percent. The Dolphins limited Lipscomb to just 25 rebounds and blocked four shots. The 17 JU turnovers only turned into 13 points for the Bisons while Jacksonville turned nine takeaways into seven points.

Lipscomb scored first in this one. Mo Arnold answered, Tyreese Davis canned a three to move ahead 5-2 and that was that. The Dolphins led the rest of the way but not without some drama. Lipscomb battled to tie the game at nine before a 10-2 Dolphin run created the first wide gap of the game. The run was capped by a James triple in transition off an assist from Loseni Kamara, who saw increased minutes with both Arnold and Sides in foul trouble.

A 7-0 Lipscomb run dropped the JU advantage down to one and the with 6:15 to play in the half, the score was tied for the last time, 20-20. Jacksonville didn't mess around down the stretch in the first. The Dolphins embarked on a 19-6 run to close out the half to take a 13-point advantage into the break.

Jacksonville held its largest lead of 14 with 18:39 to play in the game. Lipscomb chipped away and pulled to within two with 9:59 to go. Back-and-forth ensued and the lead was just three with 3:17 to play. Davis knocked down a jumper and a reverse lay-in out of a timeout to go on a personal 5-0 run, essentially putting this thing away. JU was able to knock down free throws to close out the six-point win.

These two will square up once more on Saturday at 6 p.m. Jacksonville will look for back-to-back wins for the first time since its sweep of Kennesaw State to begin ASUN play.
