Dolphins Fall Victim to Other-Worldly Shooting Performance at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's basketball team (10-13, 4-9 ASUN) fell victim to a tremendous shooting effort on the road as Stetson (9-11, 6-7) took the 92nd meeting between these programs, 91-75

The Jacksonville scoring effort was paced by the returning Kevion Nolan who contributed 17 points on 6-10 shooting and 3-6 from deep to go with three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Tyreese Davis joined Nolan near the top of the box score with 16 points while Mo Arnold and Bryce Workman each added 10. Dontarius James chipped in nine points, five boards, two assists and a steal.

The Dolphins shot 46.3 percent from the floor and 41.1 percent from deep while the Hatters shot a blistering 53.3 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from deep. Stetson held the advantage on the glass, 34-27, but the Dolphins created more turnovers, forcing the Hatters into 13 while committing just 12.

Stetson put forth what can only be described as an other-worldly effort shooting the basketball in the first half of this one. The Hatters shot 62.1 percent from the floor and 10-14 from long range to build its 15-point advantage at the break. The Dolphins had not yet surrendered 50 points in the first half of a game this season and had only given up 50 in any half just once; 52 at Georgia in the second half.

Jacksonville did it's best to keep pace, scoring 35 points on 13-27 shooting from the floor, good for 48.1 percent. That's a respectable performance any other night but on this one, Stetson was on another level. Arnold notched 10 points in that opening half and Workman added eight while Dontarius James and the returning Kevion Nolan combined for just eight.

Stetson picked up where it left off scoring its first two tries of the second half as the Dolphins continued to struggle to find a rhythm offensively. Five foul calls spread over the first two minutes of the second slowed down both sides and seemingly played into the hands of JU, desperately trying to break up Stetson's flow. But an 0-5 start from the floor in the second half left the Dolphins in a 21-point hole by the 15:27 mark.

Jacksonville fell behind by as many as 29 points with 12:46 to play in the game but began to chip away from that point on. Nolan and Davis knocked down back-to-back triples capping an 11-2 run and forcing Stetson into a timeout at the 7:18 mark, down 51-70. Loseni Kamara canned a pair of free throws out of 6:48 media timeout and the sprint to the finish was on.

Jacksonville refused to quit down the stretch. A Bryce Workman free throw pulled JU to within 13 with 2:29 to play, but Stetson did its part to keep the Dolphins at an arms-length. There is a reason a 29+ point deficit has only been overcome just twice in NCAA history. Such an effort requires near perfection and the Dolphins had some hard luck fouls and near-misses that kept them from coming all the way back. JU had to settle for the 91-75 defeat.

The second edition of this matchup will tip off on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. as the drive towards the ASUN Tournament continues. Just three games remain in the regular season as teams jockey for position on the bracket.
