JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University baseball lost in its first midweek contest of the season, falling 7-2 to Pittsburgh on Tuesday night at John Sessions Stadium.
The Dolphins (0-4) fell behind early and could not erase the early deficit, despite threatening several times late.
Pitt scored two in the top of the first off of
Austin Temple (0-1). Two straight doubles to left got the Panthers on the board, and they made it 3-0 on a single to right field in the second.
Another RBI single in the fourth followed by some aggressive baserunning on a fielder's choice helped Pitt extend the advantage to 4-0. They added one more in the fifth to make it 5-0.
JU got on the board in the fifth.
Blake Delamielleure reached on a leadoff walk and took second on a wild pitch. He went to third when
Jackson Grabsky singled and scored on
Jesus Pacheco's fielder's choice. The Dolphins added one more in the sixth to make it 6-2 when
Cory Heffron walked and stole second before scoring on Elias Flower's pinch-hit RBI single to center.
Pitt hit a home run in the seventh to make it 7-2 before the Dolphins tried to rally in the ninth. Grabsky singled with one out and
Duncan Hunter pinch-hit and reached on an error.
Ruben Someillan sprayed a single to left to load the bases but a double play ended the threat and the game.
