Dolphins Downed in Road Battle With Eagles

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Jacksonville University volleyball team was back in action at Alico Arena Saturday evening as they wrapped up their two match weekend series with FGCU. The night began with a pitched back-and-forth affair in set one, but the Dolphins (2-6, 0-4) were unable to overcome the Eagles (7-1, 5-1), falling in straight sets (22-25, 12-25, 11-25).

Jacksonville began the night with an aggressive approach, matching the Eagles point-for-point in the early going. FGCU managed to gain some separation and lead by five at 12-7, but the Dolphins kept battling back. Kills from Jenna McNamara and Autumn DeSantis made it 16-14 and keyed what would end up being an 11-3 run that put JU ahead. Isa Dostal added two kills during the run that also saw some big blocks to deny the Eagles on offense. A kill from Barbora Romancova capped the run with the the Dolphins leading at 22-19, forcing the Eagles to call their second timeout of the set. However, FGCU's adjustments out of the timeout stymied the Dolphins as the Eagles ended the set on a 6-0 run to win the opener 25-22.

The Dolphins took the lead to start the second set, racing out to a 3-1 advantage behind kills from Sydney Bolding and Camryn Honn. As FGCU came back and took the lead, Jacksonville continued to pace the home team, trailing by no more than three in the early going. Toward the middle of the set, JU pieced together a 5-1 run to go from down 9-6 to up 11-10, highlighted by kills from Bolding and Honn. However, FGCU managed to turn things around and get rolling, coming back to take the second set 25-12.

Set three saw FGCU control the tempo from start to end, hitting .348 in the final stanza as they didn't allow the Dolphins any opportunity to get settled in as they went on to close things out at 25-11.

Bolding, Dostal and McNamara each finished the evening with five kills. Bolding also recorded a dig and two block assists while Dostal had two digs and a block assist. Honn dished out 16 assists while collecting four digs and three kills while Avery Perosa posted 11 digs for the second match in a row.

The Dolphins will next head to Deland for two ASUN Conference matches with Stetson University on March 5-6. First serve is scheduled for 6 PM both days.
