DELAND, Fla. – The Jacksonville University Volleyball team took to the road once more Friday, this time from Edmunds Arena as they paid a visit to Stetson University. After dropping the opening set of the night, the Dolphins (2-7, 0-5) were able to rebound and take set two, but the Hatters (3-3, 2-3) managed to outlast Jacksonville, taking the match 3-1 (25-13, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19).
Hannah Edelman opened the evening with a kill to get JU on the board first but Stetson scored eight of the next nine points to run out to a 10-2 lead.
Camryn Honn served up an ace following an attack error by the Hatters to make it 10-4 but the home team answered with another run to further push their lead. Jacksonville pieced together a 5-1 run behind
Barbora Romancova,
Madison Rayam and
Hannah Edelman to get within five at 16-11, but again the Hatters held firm and were able to go on and take set one 25-13.
Set two saw the Hatters get on the board first and lead for most of the set before the Dolphins rallied late to capture the set. After trailing or being tied in the early going, JU managed to even the score at 15-15 on an attack error by Stetson before taking the lead on a kill by
Camryn Honn. Romancova and Edelman helped extend the advantage to 19-16 before a late surge from the Hatters sent them back in front 24-23. Jacksonville scored the final three points on a pair of attack errors from the home team sandwiched around a kill by Edelman to take the set 26-24.
Stetson came out firing in set three, quickly taking a 10-3 lead in the early going and stifle Jacksonville's offensive attack, leading by as much as 10 and going on to a 25-16 win.
The Dolphins tried to rally in the night's fourth set as they tried to force a decisive set five. The Hatters again controlled the pace early, leading 8-2 before JU marched back to get within one at 12-11, taking advantage of several Stetson offensive miscues and getting kills from Romancova,
Avery Perosa, Honn and Rayam. Stetson was able to put some distance between themselves and Jacksonville but another late surge from the Green and Gold got them back within three at 22-19 following a kill from McNamara and ace from Romancova. The comeback attempt ran out of time as the Hatters managed to hang on and take set four 25-19.
Edelman posted 13 kills and finished one dog shy of her third double-double with nine in addition to a pair of service aces. McNamara carded 11 kills to go with three digs and a block. Romancova turned in an eight kill, seven dig effort while Perosa led the team with 18 digs, just one shy of her season high along with a kill. Honn dished out 29 assists while collecting 10 digs and a pair of kills. Eight different Dolphins registered a kill in the match.
The Dolphins and Hatters will be back in action tomorrow again at 6 PM from Edmunds Arena.
