JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was all one could ask for at Southern Oak Stadium Sunday night to open ASUN Conference play, as the Jacksonville University women's soccer team played host to Stetson University. Despite allowing two goals in the first half, the Dolphins (0-5-1, 0-0-1) stormed back in the second half to tie the Hatters (1-1-1, 0-0-1) and send the match to overtime. After an additional 20 minutes of action, the evening finished with a 2-2 draw.
Stetson's first goal of the night came on a set piece in the 22nd minute. The Hatters played a corner kick from the far side into the box that was headed off the cross bar and rattled its way into the net for the first goal of the game.
The Hatters scored again just minutes later, as the Dolphins misplayed the ball deep in their own end. Stetson happened to a forward in the right place at the right time as they were able to corral the loose ball and drive into the box to find the top left corner of the goal to make it 2-0.
Jacksonville battled back after halftime and got on the board in the 69th minute.
Gabby Holtrop played a free kick from just in front of the Dolphins' bench into the box, where
Shelby Brim was able to beat the defender and head one in past a diving Stetson keeper to make it a one score game.
As the minutes wound down and the urgency picked up late in regulation, Jacksonville stayed the course and was able to net the equalizer in the 88th minute. A JU corner kick played into the box by
Lola Negrete ricocheted out to a waiting Brim, who fired a strike from 10 yards out over the outstretched hands of the goalie for her second goal of the evening.
With things even after 90 minutes, overtime would be needed to determine the outcome of a physical back-and-forth game. Jacksonville had an opportunity to net the game-winner in the 95th minute, but a shot attempt from
Alexys Nowak missed left to keep things knotted at two.
A second overtime was needed after 100 minutes elapsed with both sides deadlocked at two. Stetson had a look at a potential game-winner in the 104th minute, but it went wide as play continued and the night ended in a 2-2 draw.
Stetson outshot the Dolphins 12-6 in the game but keeper
Courtney Green was able to keep the Hatters in check after their two first half goals, registering four saves for the evening. Brim had the Dolphins' two goals on three shot attempts while Holtrop also registered a pair of shot attempts.
The Dolphins will be back in action at Southern Oak Stadium Saturday March 6 against FGCU at 1 PM.
