JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men's soccer team (2-3-1, 2-1 ASUN) completed the season sweep of Stetson (0-3-1, 0-2-1) on Saturday night under the beautiful night sky of Southern Oak Stadium, 2-0.
Olivier Correa provided both tallies for the Dolphins, the first of which was assisted by
Reggie Nicolas and the second by both
Joshua Araujo-Wilson and
Mohamed Soumah. This was a match that was played about as evenly as it could have but some extracurriculars late allowed Jacksonville to take advantage and put this one away.
The box score on its surface appears fairly event. Both sides attempted six shots and
Matt Levy made three saves in net for JU. Jacksonville held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3, but the card count favored the Dolphins, 1-3. A straight red card for the Stetson side in the 72nd minute allowed JU to play a man up the rest of the way.
The first score for Correa came on a fantastic chance in the 23rd minute. Nicolas crossed the ball center and another JU played allowed the ball to slide past, forcing the defense to pause momentarily and leaving Correa wide open on the weak side. He drove home his first with a left to the strong side corner to push JU ahead.
The Stetson red card provided Jacksonville a marked advantage down the stretch. It was in the 79th minute that Correa was able to produce another score. The two assisting Dolphins advanced quickly up field and found Correa open again for an easy tap home, putting JU on top, 2-0 with just over 10 minutes to go.
From there the Dolphins were able to pack it in against the out-manned Hatters who were unable to mount a counterattack. JU was able to secure its second win in ASUN play as it's long stretch in the city of Jacksonville to close out the regular season rolls on.
Next up will be a visit to North Florida on Mar. 20 before the Dolphins close out the regular season with back-to-back home contests on Mar. 27 and Apr. 4 opposite FGCU and North Florida, respectively. The later of those two matchups will serve as Senior Day at Southern Oak Stadium.
