FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team was back on the road Sunday afternoon for the first of two road matches to conclude the regular season, lining up opposite FGCU for the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The Dolphins (1-8-1, 1-3-1) tried to mount a comeback effort in the waning moments of play, but ran out of time as the Eagles (5-2-2, 3-2-0) came away with a 2-1 win.
After pushing the tempo of the match in the early going, FGCU scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute on a give-and-go following a throw in on a shot from the far corner of the penalty area that just eluded the reach of a diving
Courtney Green.
Jacksonville had a look to tie things in the 43rd minute on a shot by
Hayley Friedl but she was turned away by the FGCU keeper as the score remained 1-0.
Not long into the second half, the Eagles scored again, this time in the 52nd minute on a shot from the top of the penalty area following another throw in.
The Dolphins attempted to mount a late push to even the score in the closing minutes of the game, starting when
Gabby Holtrop scored unassisted in the 85th minute for her second goal of the season to make it 2-1. FGCU maintained possession for the final moments of the game, not allowing JU an opportunity at the equalizer to close out the afternoon.
Holtrop had two of JU's four shots in the game, with Friedl and
Emma Wood contributing the other two. Green made six saves in goal before handing things over to Paige Macritchie, who recorded four saves in her fourth appearance of the year.
Jacksonville will conclude the regular season next Saturday April 3 in the final River City Rumble match of the season, making the short trip across town to the University of North Florida. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
