JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Another late inning rally forced extra innings, but Jacksonville University baseball fell to FGCU 14-11 on Sunday at John Sessions Stadium.
The Dolphins (10-30, 3-15) scored seven in the bottom of the ninth to tie it, before the Eagles pushed across four in the top of the 10th to win the game.
JU scored first for the first time in the series, when
Christian Coipel doubled in the second,
Jackson Grabsky was hit by a pitch, they were both sacrificed into scoring position by
Trace Burchard before
Blake DeLamielleure hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, before
Tommy Joseph hit his first home run of his Jacksonville career in the bottom half to tie it up at two.
FGCU used a four-spot in the top of the fourth to go on-top 6-2 and chase starter
Mike Cassala. The Dolphins got one back in the sixth, when Burchard led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored when
Ruben Someillan singled to left.
Tyler Naumann worked scoreless relief until the eighth, when, after retiring the first two hitters, a dropped third strike allowed a runner to reach and the next Eagle hit a two-run homer to extend the lead to 8-3. In the ninth two more runs scored and FGCU led 10-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Dakota Julylia, Joseph and Cassala all singled, the latter driving in a run to start the ninth, chasing the Eagle reliever. After the pitching change, Coipel hit an RBI single and Grabsky walked to load the bases, before
Jake Berg lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Heffron ripped a run scoring single up the middle to make it 10-7. With two outs,
Jesus Pacheco poked an RBI single to center, then a throwing error scored another run to cut it to 10-9. Julylia singled again and Joseph's groundball to the right side was booted by the first baseman, allowing the tying run to score. Cassala struck out to end the inning with the winning run at second.
The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 10th, and JU got an out at the plate, before a two-run double put FGCU ahead for good. They finished with four runs in the inning, and Heffron hit an RBI double to drive in Coipel in the bottom of the 10th, but that is all the Dolphins could muster.
