JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Jacksonville University women's soccer team (4-1-0) earned its fourth win of the season after defeating the South Carolina State Bulldogs (0-3-0), 2-0. This victory marks the best start the program has achieved since 2002, when the Dolphins won 10 straight matches after dropping the home opener.
The first period heavily favored the Dolphins as JU dominated on offense by accumulating a number of corner kicks to pressure the Bulldogs early. At the 22 minute mark, freshman Makala Woodford found the back of the net to put the Dolphins on the board first, 1-0. Woodford's solo shot would be her first collegiate goal, in addition to the game being her first collegiate start. The Dolphins continued to have control of the game as JU attempted to take five more shots, while the Bulldogs only attempted one that would be saved by freshman goalkeeper, Mariah Winebrenner. At the 41 mark, redshirt freshman Sommer Marroquin entered the game for her season debut, and played 48 minutes to tally a new career-high.
To start the second period, JU remained consistent on offense as the Dolphins continued to threaten the Bulldogs by keeping the ball on South Carolina's half of the field. Ten minutes after the start of the period, Logan Gonzales launched the ball past the goalkeeper to extend the Dolphins lead to 2-0. This goal would also be Gonzales's first of the season. For the remainder of the contest the Bulldogs attempted to pick up the pace on offense by pursuing three shots and holding the Dolphins to only two. However, it would not be enough and the Dolphins walked off the field with its fourth regular season victory.
For two true freshmen, the match served as an opportunity to make their collegiate debuts. Both Marissa Etchart and Avery Bravo saw several minutes of action in the second period.
"It was great that we had an opportunity to play the girls that don't normally play a significant amount of minutes," assistant coach Annie Price said. "As coaches we like to see how they perform on the field and are progressing, especially since a lot of them are in their first year as college athletes."
This Friday the Dolphins will return to Southern Oak Stadium to compete against Coastal Carolina (2-0-0). Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. Visit judolphins.com for the latest information on all things JU soccer.
